ARRGH! Noise still there!

Okay, my engine is still making a vibration/noise. I replaced the starter, based on the thought that the bendix was possibly staying engaged. That didn't solve it. Next, I had the alternator removed and rebuilt (minor corrosion)and that didn't solve it. The noise, which isn't loud, sounds/feels more like a constant scraping, and comes from the engine regardless of whether it it's in gear or not, wheel turned hard over, or amidships. Several months ago, the engine was up to the oil pan or so in salt water (drain line problem), so that most likely has something to do with it. I think perhaps something is hitting the flywheel in the back, I am not totally sure. In any event, if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free, I'll entertain whatever you all think it might be! Your knowledge far surpasses mine!

Thanks!

Did you pull the outdrive and check the u-joints and shaft splines for rust?

did u check the inspection cover on the underside of the flywheel housing ? I bought a old boat one time that had been submersed in salt water, it looked like several times, to the oil pan and that thin plate was ate up. maybe that is rubbing on your flywheel. just a thought.

Re: ARRGH! Noise still there!

Thanks for the ideas. I cannot really get to the inspection plate on the flywheel, unless I remove the ingine, which might have to be done anyways. I've ordered the alignment tool and new gaskets so I can remove the outdrive. I was hoping it didn't come to that, but oh well! Rather I do it and see what's going on, than pay the dealer's exorbitant prices. Any other ideas, please let me know! Thanks again!

Pull the outdrive, hook up a water hose to the incoming water hose, run the motor !! No load but do it !!! Any noise?? You've just eliminated the outdrive, flappers, u-joints, gimbal bearing......

Do you need some sort of attachment in order to hook up the water to the incoming hose?

not really. On the inside of the transom is the hose that has made the transition from the outside hosr ( that comes from the od water pump). The inside hose probably goes over to the thermostat housing. So use that hose and bypass the o.d. water pump. Again, OD must be off.

Okay, I am going to pull it a little later today and see what I find. Anything important to look for? By 'no load' you do mean just at idle, right? I will not be able to reinstall it until I get the alignment tool & gaskets, but I want to pull it now to see if there is anything else I need to get on order so it can be fixed post-haste. Do you have any solutions for rust removal on bolts/fittings as well? :D Thanks again!

Re: ARRGH! Noise still there!

Well I went and pulled the outdrive, it came off quite easily. Per P.V.'s idea, I ran it with a hose stuck into the water intake. Purred like a kitten. The noise was gone! :) So that eliminates the engine, as far as any mechanical noise - as it could be misaligned, but there is no out of the ordinary wear on the shaft (no metal shavings, etc). Here are pictures of the outdrive: PICTURES . When I drained the oil out of the drive prior to removing it, there were some decent size metal shavings/flakes on the magnet, similar to the ones that were in it when I changed it the first time (this oil has been in it maybe 3 months, and has maybe 0.7 hours on it altogether). I attributed it to normal breaking in, etc. Does anyone have any ideas? There was some light rust on the u-joints, and some water (a little bit) was in one of the grooves in the bellows. Another, somewhat puzzling find was some scraping on the guides (?) that slide inbetween the guides on the transom when the trim is moving. It only scrapes on the one side which might mean something is 'out of whack.' Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
