Ok, Saturday I went and picked up a friends 89' Arriva from the shop. Engine overheated last year and bent/broke rods and wore down the lobes on the cam shaft. Now she's back up and running! Purring like a kitten...a big kitten.
Next step is to clean up and fix ALOT of stuff that needs some TLC.
This site has always been very helpful in the past so here goes.
Where do I get new gauges? Virtually all of them need to be replaced some don't work.
Small things like the 3 pole rocker switch for the trim I can handle, but I'm pretty sure the temp gauge and other gauges need to match the 7.4 motor. Where do I start?
Also the shifter is VERY stiff going into forward and reverse. Throttle seems fine. Now that the motor runs good we just need to finish fixing her up. Thanks for any tips, or links to the right parts for this boat!

Gauges are generic, scroll up and click on boat parts. Shift cables are available too, but you need to isolate the component causing the resistance.

You can get gages here on iboats or lots of places on the web. Like 180shabah said, they are generic. As for the shifter, mine is a little stiff also. I used some graphite and that helped a little. I have had mine for quite a few years. this one I have had for 6 years. The last one I had for about 5 years. Love the Arriva great boat. I just had the engine replaced in mime last year. Busted the crank. I am really looking forward to getting it on the water this year. Have only ran the new motor about 20 min. last year. If you have any questions you can PM me. good luck with the Arriva.

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I like the big 454 also! Now that the motor is running good, I'll dive into the other restoration soon.
So any gauges will work? I'll shop around online and see what I can come up with.
How about the Trim position gauge? How does it hook up and where do the wires go?
Temp gauge shouldn't be any big deal. What about the oil pressure gauge? It's not working either and I"m not sure where it goes into the block. Thanks for any links or pointers.

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

The trim position is on the lower unit. I can't remember witch one is on which side. One side is the lower unit position and the other side is the one that will stop When you trim up the lower unit. Then you have to "trailer" it to get it to go the rest of the way up. The sending unit for the oil pressure is on the port side of the motor."I think" it is just a brass bell looking thing with one wire hooked to it. And you can go to an auto parts store and just get one for the 454 and it should work. Just unscrew it from the block and take it into the parts store. The part number should be on it. The temp gage sensor is on the front by the thermostat if I remember right. Same thing with it. Not real sure why none of your gages are working. Usually they don't go bad, it is the sensors. So check them first.

I'll check and clean up the sensors first, thanks for the direction it will help alot. I do know the wiring had a bad connection behind the rocker switch for the trim. Maybe a new switch will make the gauge work again. If not I'll check the sensors and such. Thanks!

Sounds like several wiring/electrical issues...
Head up to the adults only section and download the manuals for your engine and drive - complete wire diagrams are useful.

Did some more work on the trailer today, rewelded braces and such.
Next project is the switches and sensors. Where in the world do I find a "up and down" rocker switch for the trim and trailer buttons? None of the local parts stores had them. What else would it be called...Thanks!

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

Sorry for the lack of info. The boat is an 89'. 7.4 Mercruiser, unsure the make of the lower foot or anything else for that matter. I figured the rocker switch was fairly common, but it's turning out to be hard to find.
In regards to the repairs...I saw the broken and bent rods as well as the hydrolic lifters and the cam shaft w/ badly worn lobes. The mechanic is VERY good and trustworthy. He told us the heads/lifters/something has been replaced from the older adjustable style to the hydrolic style? Anyway, the boat was run without one of the main cooling hoses hooked up and valved started sticking and that's all she wrote. The boat was run hard before anyone knew (i wasn't there) that anything was wrong. We were hoping after it was run hot there may not have been any damage, but we were wrong.
Anybody know how to loosen up the shift linkage? Don't know the model, but it's orginal to the boat and has the forward neutral reverse seperate from the throttle. The gear shifter is VERY stiff. Thanks and again, forgive my ignorance, it's not my boat and I know very little about it.

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

I have two Arrivas, one is a 1991 2450 Bow Rider & the other is a 1990 2452 Cuddy. Both were fitted with the 7.4L 330HP Mercruiser and bravo outdrives. One i have restored and the other is in process. Both had soft floors everywhere except up the front. Even the parts either side of the engine. Floor replacement is relatively easy. They did some stupid things like use stainless steel tow/tiedown hooks with normal steel nuts on the inside, all my cleats were pitted but easy to find replacements. If you are going to step up the horsepower considerably i would suggest beefing up the transom, i had my first one done as a precaution (blown 502) but i will be keeping the other unit standard.
As for the switches, i found no direct replacement. All my switches worked but had the chalkey appearance. I polished them with 1200 grit sand paper and then buffed them, they look like new. All the metal plates i had redone. Gauges i replaced all new with Faria, they make the larger 5in via custom order for the tach & speedo (speedo only goes to 60MPH though) to match the smaller gauges. Chesapeake white SS look awesome. You can buy the bulb condoms to change the color of the gauges for nightime use. If you have to redo the floor i would suggest yanking out the tank and getting it cleaned out and re-sealed. I did not do it on my first one and suffered with months of changing clogged fuel filters.
For spare parts you just have to keep an eye out on jaxed etc. I was lucky enough to find a guy parting one out and bought everything that was good.
Keep the Arrivas going, they are a great boat, i get compliments on mine everywhere it goes, mind you the through hull exhaust with a supercharged 502 causes people to look. I havent pushed it past 70MPH but it has plenty more left and i am only doing 4700RPMS with a big merc 4 blade prop.

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

I would check ebay for the guages. I would also replace the cables if the shifting is stiff. Do not wait on this or you will break the controller, which is expensive to replace. Cables are cheap. Just disconnect the drive and carb sides of the cables and if it is still stiff it is probably cables, never heard of a controller going stiff but cables on the other hand are pretty common for what you are describing.

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

Before you launch into a project replacing gauges, why not do a little diagnostic work and make sure the guage is actually bad. Replacing what you think is a bad gauge might very likely leave you with a brand new non-functioning gauge. They rarely are bad since the problem is usually 1) wiring, 2) wiring, 3) wiring, 4) sender, then 5) guage in that order of likelyhood. However, if you intend to to buy a complete set remember that you have an I/O. Gauge sets are different for an I/O than they are for an outboard. Two stroke outboards don't require an oil pressure gauge and most outboard sets don't include a water temp or water pressure gauge. If you don't find what you need right here on iBoats, try Great Lakes Skipper (greatlakesskipper.com).

Re: Arriva 2450 need help

Congrats on your Arriva! They are neat old boats for sure. I have a 1989 2050 that I completely resotored and updated. For the gauges I went with Teleflex Lido with stainless steel trim. They are a sharp white gauge and have a red backlight glow at night which looks really cool. I completely removed the old gauge panel and mage my own wooden panel. This stuff is actually really easy to do if you have the patience. Some of my old gauges just weren't working anymore and they looked horrible. All of my wiring was still perfect though. I did have to run extra wires for the trim indicator and depth finder but not of that is very hard either with a little bit of research. Enjoy!
