I am going to attempt my second boat restore with this pretty cool old boat 19' tri hull bow rider, Mercuriser I/o 250 GMC. The previous owner has already ripped some of the floor out. The stringers run up under the bow (this is a bow rider style boat) see attached photos. The floor and seats of the bow are 1 piece with the top cap.

It is my opinion that I will have to remove to the top cap in order to "properly" replace the stringers :(

any other thoughts out there?

From what I've seen....popping the cap may be a bit of a pain but it makes everything else MUCH easier.

Popping it will be a pain.. that is for sure. On the last boat I restoreed I barley got it back on and it was all messed up cause they had stapled the two halves together as well to guide the rub rail holder. The fiberglass around the staples was so old that it lost all structural integrity. Forcing me to bend it pin it in many different places.

The transom in this boat is also most likely shot, but I fear pulling the motor (adds way more work to the restore in an exponential manner!) Last boat was an outboard. Easy stuff.

The motor has strong compression but I haven't gotten it on the water to test it yet, I will test it towards the end of Jan. before I make my decisions about the transom. As a side note I have acquired a spare part for everything aside from the block for the motor and outdrive, from a parts boats on which the block froze this year. So I am in good shape should I need a replacement! I took all of the parts off of the parts boat so I have an understanding of how it come apart.

What do you guys think, with all the spare parts (including a lower unit), strong compression, should I go for a complete rebuild (transom as well?)
