Re: Asian Carp almost to Lake Michigan

I really hope the DNA tests were flawed, and only due to the bacteria and DNA being carried by ships and drifting in the currents...

Not likely. This is not how they spread, or how they were introduced.

"Someone mentioned they don't bite lures, but this says otherwise. Not sure who to believe, now..

Common carp are extremely popular with anglers in many parts of Europe, and their popularity as quarry is slowly increasing among anglers in the United States (though destroyed as pests in many areas), and southern Canada. Carp are also popular with spear, bow, and fly fishermen.
"

I said that, this is the FIRST and only time I have seen someone say otherwise. Perhaps they are snagging them?
What lure would you use on a fish that eats plants??

I had seen a program with them leaping fish. They were trying to scoop them with a net as the boat sped along and the fish leaping.

Carp lay eggs by the hundreds of thousands, yet their population remains the same, so the eggs and young must perish in similar vast numbers. Eggs and fry often fall victim to bacteria, fungi, and the vast array of tiny predators in the pond environment. Those fortunate enough to survive to juvenile are preyed upon by other fish such as the northern pike and largemouth bass.

But we're talking about ASIAN carp, not common carp. Wiki doesn't talk about catching ASIAN carp at all (I just looked) Northern Pike and Bass do not live in the environment that Asian Carp are in. And if they did, it would be a severe case of the hunted becoming the hunters once they got to a certain size. Carp bite lures, we know this - but Wiki doesn't say anything about catching Asian Carp.... it lists them as a species of carp all on it's own...

I read it in one of the articles posted above earlier (at least i thought I did) ... but I've just re-read them, and can't find the reference again... it makes sense, I mean, water flows.... dna is in the water.... DNA could therefore, float, in water, past an electrical barrier and be detected further upstream

In Canada, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans has evaluated the risk of Asian carps invading Canadian waters, particularly the Great Lakes, either by introduction from the Mississippi or through the market in live carps.[8] A few bighead carp and grass carp have been captured in Canada's portions of the Great Lakes, but no Asian carp (other than common carp, an originally eurasian species) is known to be established in Canada at this time. In Mexico, grass carp have been established for many years in at least two river systems, where they are considered invasive, but no other Asian carps are known to have been introduced.

Well, according to wiki there are 8 types of Asian carps..... so 2 are in Canadian Great Lakes already.... either way, this is a really scary thing to me - just to imagine the habitat so screwed up.... anyway, I hope this gets in the news more... this is as major as global warming, and the recession in my books.

I think the government should pose some ludicrous tariff on the incoming Asian goods we buy, then use the money to pay fisherman to over-fish these carp until they're no longer a problem.

Or maybe we should just put a higher price on Asian Carp than can be had for whales and invite the Japanese over here to do "Research" on them....

It did make the news but wasn't being heard because everyone is all buzzing on what the celebs are doing in their private times.

Common carp can be catch with nightcrawler, sweet corn, and fly lures. I have hooked them on topwater bait, jig, crankbait, and spinnerbait while bass fishing. Grass carp? never caught one or heard of anyone caught one. Silver carp? I suspect they be the same as grass carp. The one thing that the state of IL should do is to grant a silver carp commercial fishing license to anyone who applied for one to fish the Illinois River. The fisherman would be required to throw back any non-carp catches. The game fish population would be hurting but at least won't get wipe out by poison. Just imagine the environmental impacts if rotenone is applied to the entire river. A strong Canadian wind would carry the dead fish stench all the way to the Gulf. The money that they would save from not using poison and licensing fees could be use to restock the river. There won't be much carp left once net dragging boats start to show up there. ;)

Asian carp, a bow and arrow, and a Kayak are a good combination

Michigan's governor and state attorney apparently filed a request to close the shipping canal entirely. The 100 year-old aggreement has a clause that allows it to be amended in the event of detrimental impact on fisheries.

Pretty typical for Michigan, we will keep our fisheries until they are pryed from our cold, dead hands and we never relinquish control of the Great Lakes to any outside entity.

The Army Corp of Engineers will pursue all other options of course, and hopefully find an alternative solution since the shipping canal is important to the region.

That is sad

Well, the canal is pretty disgusting to begin with, actually. It's number one purpose was to drain Chicago's sewer water away from the natural flow into Lake Michigan. Better to send their crap down the Illinois River than have it continue to pollute Lake Michigan. With better sanitation plants, some argue it's not necessary for that anymore.

Recently it was discovered that the water at the bottom of the canal actually flows to Lake Michigan. That's one possible explanation of the fish DNA.

The bad news is the poison mutated them into Godzilla Carp. They have eaten the sears tower and most of downtown Chicago. Well, it's not ALL bad, I suppose.

I wonder if the DNA found was from this one, single asian carp....

Maybe they should capture as many local species as possible, then poison the mississippi back to where she came from! lol - when the poison wears off - reintroduce the fish back!

Coruse this wouldn't work - just surprised still really, how far they have made it up the river and all..

Re: Asian Carp almost to Lake Michigan

When they first discovered the carp in Louisiana and noticed the population moving north a bounty was proposed to catch and destroy the fish. The bounty was something like $.10-.20 per pound for commercial fisherman to use gill and trommel (entanglement) nets as well as stop nets. Nobody wanted any part of it because they were worried about game fish stocks and that idea went nowhere. They did not want nets in the river. It is kind of ironic that they just poison everything (kill it all) instead of having an unknown mortality rate for other species of fish. Just think how much money and grief that would have saved.

Poisoning actually has been used in Louisiana. It was just done in a marsh south of New Orleans. It wasn't Asian Carp and I have forgotten the species, but it was invasive and prone to wiping out native species.

Exactly what I was thinking.
