Ahoy!Complete rebuild of my 1987 140 looper, the crankcase flange is to be tourqed to 60-54 inch lbs.I cannot get to three of the bolts with the tourqe wrench for one,Another problem I have is the tourqe wreches I have start at 120 inch lbs, Does anyone have a good way to tourque the crankcae flange bolts properly? This is critical considering their is no gasket and I have to use locktite 518 gasket eliminator on the surfaces.

Re: Assembling a 140 looper, case flange prob,

I'm a new guy to marine engines but have handled a lot of wrenches in my day, first thing is get a torque wrench within the specs you need, you can rent them from most auto parts stores or rental stores these days, also if the traditional socket doesn't reach the bolts you can use crows feet, or knuckles and extensions to get at the bolts just remember the different attachments will not have an accurate reading, so you need to use just a socket and a bolt for a test run, stick a bolt and nut in a vice and torque it to the specs your going to use, then put your attachments on and mark the readings when you try to tighten the same bolt...

Re: Assembling a 140 looper, case flange prob,

make shure you torqeu them to spec.
specialy the main bearing bolts.

they not only torqeu the crankcase down to seal the case but they also preload your bearings around the crankshaft.
if not torquet down correctly bearing failure will occur.and of course crank case leak .

get the right sockets and tools.
reed the manual for propper torqeu sequence.
make shure the case is not warped.
and clean the flanges with acetone and prime them with the loctite primer.

good luck

Re: Assembling a 140 looper, case flange prob,

if i recall correctly the main bearing bolts should be about 30 f/lbs
double check it.

Re: Assembling a 140 looper, case flange prob,

The main crankcase bolts are 26-30 ft lbs, no need to double check.the outer flange bolts are 60-84 inch lbs(sorry for the typo) And I am well aware what happens if not torqued properly,The two inch pound torque wrenches I have start at 120 inch lbs.I don't think I have ever seen a smaller one.I just thought some one may have an easy way to clear the reed openings in the crankcase.Something I have overlooked.

I am also using a Clymer wannabe manual which does not show a sequence. Center out is what common sence tells me but Clymer Should make it clear for the 30.00 it is not worth.

yes they do have smaller inch lbs torque wrences,I have one ,starts at 0,your wrench may be a 1/2 inch and therefor the socket is too large in dia.to get at the bolts,my 3/8 snap-on with a craftsman socket has rebuilt many engines, maybe a local shop will rent you one

Re: Assembling a 140 looper, case flange prob,

Thanks,I have a 1/2 snap on that has built alot of motors.Just built the 421 600 horsepower motor for my race car.But inch lbs has never been a factor with the race car stuff. The inch lbs. ratchet I have is a craftsman 3/8. and some china wrench I borrowed from the neighbor which I was reluctant to use anyways is the same.I am going to have to find another. It just amazes me that I have to tourque a couple of these down by feel. And OMC did not run a seal on these flanges,Another poor design by omc.
