I just had to share. I just picked up my 1950 Johnson 5-horse from North York Marine (nymarine.ca) 15 months after dropping it off for a total restoration. The original powerhead had too much clearance between the crank journals and the bronze bushings, so Peter found a TN-28 block that was a better basis for a rebuild. The TN-28 block also used more modern points and other tune-up parts. While finishing up the motor he found that my ready-pull starter would not fit on the new block because the TN-28 block used a different flywheel. He found another ready-pull but had to strip it and repaint it, plus the rope and starter spring needed replacing.

When I dropped it off it was a worn-out motor that dad retired in 1965 and replaced with a 9? Johnson. It had only run once since 1965 when a cousin borrowed it in 1976.

Here are some pictures of it, plus a shot of the cedar-strip square-stern canoe that it will end up on (that one will take a lot of elbow grease, blood, sweat and tears.) The canoe will be my next endeavor that will have me posting in the Boat Restoration forum. I must be a masochist.

Nice Job !

I'm Working On A 16 Ft Grand Laker Canoe And Do Need Some Input On My Transom Repair If Anyone Cares To ?

I Have Dry rot In The Glue Joints On A Oak Transom. What Will Be The
Best Solution , ( Router Then Wood Strips ), Or Some Kind Of Fiber Filler With Reinforced Glass And Resin ?

Thanks Chuckles

Wow! Very nice motor. I LOVE that boat. It will be just beautiful on that boat. Heck, it doesn't even look like the boat needs restoring.
Thanks for the pics,
