If the Force checks out then that is a good deal - I am not sure but I believe that in 1977 hp was rated at the flywheel as opposed to the prop as it is now. I have a 1999 90 hp Force that I picked up last year - when I was doing my research on the bad reputation it seemed to be based on the pre Mercury days back in the 80's. I agree with you about the horror stories floating around about the Force brand but I think that most of the problems were due to these motors being put on entry level boats and they rec'd little or no maintenience. I have no complaints with my engine, but my neighbor's uncle's friend knew someone that had a Force engine and it killed his dog then stole his truck and ran over a bunch of nuns....

I still think you should take the $700 and buy the new parts and machining for your 65hp and then spend a couple days putting it back together. And I think you mentioned you can do autobody work so prepping and painting the cowling and leg and then spraying it should be a cakewalk for you.
Then you will basically have a NEW motor and if you keep the receipts you are guarenteed to get your money back and probably will make a good chunk of change when you sell the boat/motor in a year or so.
Plus you will have trouble-free and enjoyable boating in the meantime.
Just my .05 cents
