....do you throw in the towel?

I have a 1974 Evinrude 40 longshaft that had been in the garage ever since we got it for whatever reason. Upon disassembling the lower unit, I found that it needs a new prop shaft, all new bearings, new bushings for the shaft gears, all new seals, the seal holder for the shaft seal, and pinion gear. Also, the lower casing seems to have been cracked at one point, and seems to be sound, but I would probably end up replacing that too. I did happen to find what I think is the right casing on ebay for 5 bucks plus 8 shipping, at this point. Still got a few days left, so I am not sure about what it will end up being, but it is definitely better than the one I have. I haven't priced everything, but it seems the best I will do on the shaft is 125, the shaft seal holder is 95, and the pinion gear is 140. Then, you have all the bearings, seals, and bushings. Basically, I will have to rebuild the lower unit.

Now, I haven't even looked that much at the top of the motor, but it all seems to be there, and wasn't full of water like my lower unit. But, I do know I will still be facing the expense of a carb kit, water pump kit, new plugs, possibly new points etc.

At this point, I think we have 250 invested in the motor, and another 60 or so in the tiller I bought for it.

My question is, would y'all go ahead and rebuild the LU, or look for a replacement motor?

We have already determined that this won't be ready in time for vacation on the 28th, and am hoping to find a rental that we can take to the beach with us, or a good deal on a running one in the next week or so.

Thanks for any and all opinions.

Re: At what point....

I would look for a replacement lower unit used. I think that will be the quickest and cheapest method. try aomci.org in their classified section and see if anyone there can help.

i would be tempted to hook a hose the water tube and see if the top would run, before spending anything.
