My old 350 chev i/o says it wants ATF type A. Can I use the Dexron III? I just don't know.

What are you using it for? Anyway it should be fine. My buddy owns a tranny shop and told me they use the same tranny fluid in just about everything these days. There are some exceptions in some foriegn junk.

if thats for the power steering, not sure what A is, but that system doesn't really care all that much. Dex III should be fine.

If it's 'old' and specifies 'Type A', I believe I'd use Type A. Dexron 'might' be OK, but why take that chance with your veteran power plant ...

type A is an old designation as opposed to type F which was Ford only, dexron III or mercon is the current replacement fluid, I havent seen the old original type A fluid for at least 15 years and doubt if it is even made any more
