attaching upholstered sideboards to hull

Hi all,

Just wondering how people connnect sideboards to their hulls? I was thinking about installing bolts into the plywood panels before they are upholstered?

How Have others mounted their upholstered side board? Ie, fixing points, fasteners etc.

I don't want the fasteners to be seen...

to be consealed, i've found 2 ways that work well, you prefit your plywood, drill the holes for your bolts (you have to be able to reach them from the back side) i put the bolt thru the pluwood, and put a locking nut on the back side to keep the bolt from turning, then enlarge the hole in the boat to accomodate the nut, large washer and lock nut form the backside of the boat. i've also seen a clip (males and females) you mount the females on the boat and the males on the panel. then just slip line up and push the panel down so the clips mate. these work well wher you have equipment behind the panel that needs periodic service. the easiest is the use a stainless screw with a trim washer, and just thru screw it to the boat.

they also have threaded inserts for the plywood that dig in the wood and lock (lowes), and sometimes I use a screw with a male snap and cover it with a matching snap-on button

i've tried the clawed insert, and find it can be extreme hard to get to line up when working blind. the snap button cover works well also.

Called Tee-Nuts, work amazing! I go through tons of these. Lowes does carry them.

The last 2 boats I have done, I have used 3" comercial grade Velcro...with that being said they were straight runs (with out bends) and they were smaller cusions. You need to prep the back side of your plywood with a good paint so the velcro attachs good. The reason I do it that way is because at the end of the season I take them off and store them in my basement, Saves alot of cleaning and harsh bleachs etc on your stiching. My buddy afixed his last year that way and they were 9 1/2 feet long and 6 " high......Just a thought

When I did mine,.......

I used "Lift the Dot" Snaps to cover/ hide the Screws............

I know you said that you don't want the fasteners to be seen but, I've used these, and they look great. They come in all colors, even chrome plate.

Whatever you use............ make sure they are stainless, brass or nylon. You do not need anything rusting or corroding that is out of sight.

Snaps.

Don't overlook the holding power of snaps. They are an easy on - easy off - attachment device, available in stainless, come in various sizes, use positive mechanical fastening device (screws, not glue), low profile, low cost, easy to replace if damaged, and work excellent as an out-of-sight fastener.

Screw these stainless "Gypsy Studs" to the boat:

Then attach these to the back of the seat with some stainless screws:

Then just press the seats backs in place. SNAP! and you are done.
