Attention All Canadian boaters:
A reminder that as of September 15, 2009, All Canadian boat operators of pleasure crafts (large or small) are required by federal law to carry a license, to that prove they have been certified.
In other words, we must obtain and carry a ?Pleasure Craft Operator Card?. The FINE for no operator card is $250.

For Non-Residents of Canada:
If your pleasure craft is in Canadian waters for 45 consecutive days or more, the operator is required to carry a proof of competency. An operator card or an equivalent issued by your state or country is considered a proof of competency.

The fastest and easiest method of obtaining the boat operation certification is to write the Transport Canada Boat Exam, Online. Just do a Google search and you will find many sites where you can do this.
This Transport Canada link should answer all questions, www.tc.gc.ca/marinesafety/debs/obs/paperwork/paperwork_operator.htm plus they provide a Course Providers Database if you wish to take a course first.

The test has 37 questions, all are multiple choice. It is reasonably easy and is mostly common sense, you must have 75% to pass. When you pass, a temporary permit can be printed on your computer until you Operator Card arrives in the mail.

I just got around to taking my test, I am no genius and I managed to pass with only one wrong. If you are worried about it, you can Google search for a free online sample test and try out your boating skills. This should give you a good indication where your skills are lacking and need improvements to pass the exam.

Re: Attention All Canadian boaters

Thanks for the reminder. The missus and I will have to do it this summer.

I was hoping my Toronto Harbour Commisson licence would be taken as perhaps an indicator of competency. (Serious great lakes shipping traffic, multiple ferries, marine police/fire units to dodge, low-flying aircraft markers, mandatory in-water competency test including boat handling, MOB procedures, etc.)...but nope. They'd rather have their 37 multiple choice online-sitting-on-yer-arse-at-a-desk test plus all important fee to the feds count as the defacto proof of boating competency ).

I predict reduction in boating accidents as a result of this program will be exactly nil...

Not bitter...not bitter at all...:D

For best results, try a course! I did one when I was quite young, and it was really interesting to learn from the "seasoned veterans".
