Ok, so here's your trivia question for the day...

I have a 50lb bag of chicken food that's 15% protein. I also have a bucket of grubs that are 45% protein. I need to raise the bag of chicken food from 15% to 22% protein using the grubs.

So, how many lbs of 45% protein grubs to I need to add to a 50lb bag of 15% protein chicken food to bring it up to 22% protein???

Ok, get ready, set, GO!

Re: Attn all mathermiticians, educated people, & smarty pants:

if i've done my math correctly here

grubs (a) 45% ========= (x) 7
\ /
(c) 22%
/ \
feed (b) 15%========== (y) 23

y=a-c (y=45-22)
x=c-b (x=22-15)

so you need 23 parts feed and 7 parts grub to get your 22% protein

so you have 50lbs/23parts = 2.17

thus giving you 2.17*7 = 15.19lbs of grubs

providing I did my math right at 620am

It won't work....Raising chicken feed to that high of a protein content will give them the squirts. Then you end up with scrawny or dead birds... Sometimes math does not apply.

true cofe and i'd agree with ya but now he has the math equation and can substitute any % he wants to get a specific blend.

Also what I used is called the dairyman's square which is a variation of the pearson's square.

There is no way to get the correct amount because we don't have weight of the bucket of grubs. Now just a guess 7%

22% protein will work...I've been using it for a long time and have raised at least 1,000 meat birds on it. I wouldn't use 22% for laying hens, but I'm not raising laying hens.

If I can figure out how many lbs of grubs to use & switch feeds, I'd save about $10,000 a year in feed costs.

You can't really free-range the breed I'm raising as they need a lot of protein and a lot of them would be taken by predators. I raise them in chicken tractors which is as close to free-range as you can get while still protecting the birds.

Last, I'm not sure what a bucket of them weighs. I know 1 lb of wet grubs is 255 grubs, but I'm using dry- so I don't know how many dry grubs = 1 lb.

Correcto on the weight of the grubs ..

But how many lbs can you add to a 50lb bag is the question .. if the 50 lb bag is full.. then you cant Add more ( unless you account for settling of the chicken feed). Then there is the question of how dense the grubs are..and are they alive ( will the grubs eat the chicken feed) ?

I think that the question in simple nature is adding lbs to a lb bag. You cant add lbs in a 50lb bag. If you add one more oz then the bag is comprimised (sp ) .

Re: Attn all mathermiticians, educated people, & smarty pants:

50 lbs @ 15% + X lbs at 45% = (50 + X)lbs @ 22%

50(.15) + X(.45) = (50 + X)(.22)

7.5 + .45X = 11 + .22X

.23X = 3.5

X = 15.22

You need to add 15.22 lbs of 45% protein grubs to the 50lb bag. You'll end up with 65.22 lbs of 45% protein chicken food.

Looks like my math works out the same as Kohrah's.

I agree with the math.
Just wondering if the chickens would have selective eating habits with such a feed. They may pick out and eat only the grubs first, and then the grain. Or vise a versa......They may refuse to eat certain parts of the mix after awhile. Some more experimentation is needed.

Just put the whole mess into a large blender, like a concrete mixer and smoosh everything together so the chickens cant' pick at the mix.

Love the Monty Python reference, southkogs!

Well...

It's really a simple matter of weight ratios...

Aw come on southkogs... ever body knows they are African chickens. Euro chickens won't eat grubs.

"Escargot," my brother. People eat snails over there ... I would think the chickens are slightly less picky :D
