With all the rain we have had lately, my grass is growing so fast you can almost see it.

I mow about 6 acres with my Kubota and a 60" finish mower.

Got out this morning to try to get some done. It was about 90* at 8:30 AM.

Got about an acre done and the tractor (30hp) started to bog. . . then I smelled smoke. Burned a bearing in one of the idlers in the snaky belt train. That cheap mower only has zirks on the blade shafts.

Into the shop, take the cover off and take the belt off. Locate the bad bearing. Oh, #$%^. The shaft is captured under a welded bar. Cannot be removed. Either rebuild the whole thing or scrap it. That's the second one of those David Phillips mowers that has bit the dust in a year. Bought them both used and scavenged one for parts to make the other one work.

Lesson: Trying to get off cheap will cost you in the end. I knew that but tried it anyway. :(

That grass will be waist high before I get this sorted out.

JB, Sorry to hear that.
Get a Woods mower.
I know they ain't cheap, but the one I have was bought in 1990 and mowed 10 acres at the local Lowes ever week for 10 years with no problems and it is still cutting today.

Woods, huh? Thanks SBN. I will look into one.

Meanwhile I mounted the field mower and got another couple acres rough mowed. I'm getting too old for manhandling heavy implements. :( I'm beat and soaked.

Uh, they are.
Notice he said a David Phillips mower, not a Kubota mower. :p
I have a B-7100HST that was bought in 1990 and has over 2000 hours on it and a 60" belly mower with no problems except the belt ever 3 year or so.
Just like the Energizer bunny, they just keep going and going.............

Like SBN said.

The Kubota (B2150 HST) is only 7 years old, but seems indestructible. 900 hours and counting.

Both mowers were David Phillips, bought used and scavenged to make one work. Both froze bearings in unlubricated pullys.

No canopy, Ryan. Can't get under my fruit trees with a canopy on. Hard enough with the RPS (BLESS RPSs. Another story for another time).

I have a feeling that JB wears a wide brim hat, Thus, no need for the canopy.

Sorry to hear your woes, JB. It's been a long time since I dealt with big mowers. Heck, my puny mower here doesn't even get warmed up-except that it's already 110 degrees.

However, the ones I did deal with were completely serviceable.

I think SBN has the solution. Or, a good welder and some custom work.

Poor JB? maybe.Dumb JB? I don't think so.JB,Never heard of a David Phillips. But ,if the finish cut mower is what you're having problems with and you got some change to spend in the future for a new or used unit, along with SBNs suggestion ,consider a Scag mower.Don't have one myself cause when I bought the 22.5 hp Yazoo I currently use ,the deal was too good to pass up.All of the big time commercial guys down here use Scag zero turn turf tigers finish cut mowers. They're tough as nails, heavier guage decks, better bearing setups, low profile, good parts availability, and best of all they come in orange color.Good luck with whatever you end up with and be careful out in that dang Texas heat this summer.

JB,
You might look at Land Pride mowers. I had one and though it was pricey, it was well made, did the job right, and was easily serviced.

Right, SBN. It is Dale Phillips. My bad. :(

Going to my Kubota dealer today to get his advice.

BTW, I have had several Kub-otas and several Toy-otas. They are so good I may go looking for a REAL-ota. :)

That reminds me of what one of our neighbors teased my dad about in the mid sixties when he bought a Toyota Hilux pickup for his work truck. He asked , "hey O'Brien ,what's a Toy ota ? Do they come standard size too?"

Re: AUGH!! Oh poor JB, DUMB JB.

Well, I visited three dealers today and examined about six brands of finish mower.

Liked the Woods and the new style Dale Phillips, but:

The Brush Hog 60" was sturdier, has rear discharge and the wheels are set in from the sides so that I can mow tight up to the fence without snagging it. More bux, but better warranty.

That's what I bought. Gonna pick it up tomorrow (didn't take the utility trailer today).

Thanks to all for the suggestions. They helped me decide. :)

hey jb, what brand did you buy? is brush hog a brand, or type of mower?
i've been dragging a woods 560 finish behind by 750 deere for 18 years, three belts and two spindles to date, runs great.
my niebors b7100 just broke the water pump after 21years and a oil change.
