These guys down under must be brilliant.

SYDNEY, Australia - "Migrants who want to become Australian citizens will have to take English exams and prove their knowledge of local history and customs under new guidelines introduced Monday by Prime Minister John Howard.

Would-be citizens and permanent residents will also have to sign a statement saying they understand commonly held Australian values, such as respect for the law, religious and individual freedoms, and the equal rights of men and women."

Wow, what a concept.

The USA has set shining examples of how NOT to do things, so it should be relatively easy for the rest of the world to learn from our mistakes.

Oh how things have changed, there once was a time when the only way to get into Australia was to have a total disrespect for the law, maybe it's just that they have enough convicts living there now. d:):love:d:)

is this a discussion about naturalization procedures? Does the U.S. not require written & spoken English and knowlege of U.S. history, the constitution & government?

or is it just a general USA-bashing session?

a signed statement of understanding Australian values...excellent idea, that'll keep out the riff-raff.

Re: Australia, are they really that much smarter?

We do not have such a massive political rift between our equivalent of the Reps and the Dems. Nor do we require a person have knowledge of our social structure and values... yet. We have a huge infestation of "family" immigrants who have no idea about Australia, its customs or its language so things are still a huge mix of cultures over here. In the main it's working, however we have some ethnic groups who believe they are above the law. We'll get there and I believe the proposed changes to the rules should help immigrants integrate into Australian society. 8)
Incidentally, RJPS is only being allowed in temporarily and I have informed the local police of his intended place of abode!

The Dutch do something simular. If you declare your intention to immigrate into the Netherlands, they make you sit through a video that has gay love scenes in public places and you are told that if you get grossed out by it, you should not try to live in holland

Yep, Jtex, the good ol USA has for a long time a test for immigrants to become citizens, including language, government, US History etc. The Aussies are just copying us!

There is widespread confusion, it seems, between the legal path from immigration to citizenship in this country, and illegal immigration. You'd think they'd be relatively simple distictions to understand, but apparently not so much.

Re: Australia, are they really that much smarter?

Talk is cheap, I wonder if they will enforce the laws on the books, unlike us, who don't seem to have the stomach to do so. We might offend some of those illegals, and we can't do that, now can we?

Time to get off the PC train I say, it's headed for a wreck. We don't need a ton of new laws, just need to have the guts to enforce the laws that are already there.

Easier and better way is to wait until he's at the airport on the way home..........a quick phone call to customs about certain herbal substances hidden within his body should produce the desired results. The twang of a rubber glove can do strange things to people at an airport.

Although from what I hear RPJS will be coming home a lot sooner than he had planned 8)

On the original topic, it seems a strange concept that countries should expect you to have a knowledge of their culture and language before you live there. I mean, surely the Australian welfare system must have it's claims forms translated into other languages like the ones in the UK ? :'(

Here maby this will make up for it. 8)

A florist goes to the local barber shop for a haircut. When it is time to
pay, the barber says "I'm sorry, I cannot accept money from you; I'm
doing community service this week." The florist is pleased and leaves the shop.
Next morning when the barber goes to open his shop, There is a thank you
card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill
the barber again replies: "I'm sorry, I cannot accept money from you; I'm
doing community service this week." The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
Next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a thank you card
and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later a Republican comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his
bill the barber again replies: "I'm sorry, I cannot accept money from you;
I'm doing community service this week." The Republican is very happy and
leaves the shop.
Next morning when the barber goes to open, there is a thank you card and
a dozen different books such as "How to Improve Your Business" and
"Becoming More Successful."

Then a Democrat comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill
the barber again replies: "I'm sorry, I cannot accept money from you;
I'm doing community service this week." The Democrat is very happy and
leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen
Democrats lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the
left and the right

Heartless flippin' Republican. How does he know the Barber can read?

I've been in Australia a lot on biz. I have watched their Gov in action on TV. I actually think they are just as divided, maybe worse. Now I'm basing this on their newspaper articles and the way they talk to each other in Parliament :% Poor John Howard, he gets beat up pretty good in the papers that's for sure.

I also sense a very similar PC culture. The more urban, the more PC, the more rural a little less. I've heard racist remarks in a Biz setting that I would have never heard in the US and it is less diverse if you ask me. The US has the same Asian immigrants, the same Europeans (probably more diverse in the US), we both have our indigenous people, and we have more of African descent, and they have no Hispanics and I dare you to find one Eskimo . . .

BTW, rule #1, don't get Mexican food in either the UK or Australia :=

Re: Australia, are they really that much smarter?

That whole PC thing is an excellent example of a slippery slope. It muddies the water. What used to be a basic American right - call it "plain-talking", call it "free speech", whatever, sometimes it's rude but that's irrelevant, is becoming illegal and as a result, what used to pass for common courtesy is now scorned upon as "politically correct."
