I've got an 86 Merc 45hp. When I bought the boat a few years ago, the Auto Blend oil injection system was disconnected. I've had concerns since I bought it that the mix ratio was not accurate that I am mixing in the tank. In fact, I know it's not since I looked into the Auto Blend unit. I want to connect it back up again. The unit is automatic and the only thing the electronics do is monitor oil level. My concern is how do I know the oil injector is supplying oil to the gas? I've taken the unit apart and it seems in perfect conditon. I just wanted to know if there is a way to visually see if the pump is working.

Re: Auto Blend questions

The mix ratio is 50:1, just get one of those cylinders w/ the gradations on it from West marine for $5. That way you won't have to worry about the mix being off. There is a reason why no one on here uses their oil injection systems. It is an unreliable system that can cause reliably destructive results such as seized motors. Why take the risk?

Re: Auto Blend questions

Do yourself and your engine a favor remove the unit and deposit it in the nearest trash bin, I lost 2 powerheads to mine in the first year I owned my 115, Mercury made good on both engines and the third one never saw the auto blend and is still running

Re: Auto Blend questions

I just spoke to a merc mechanic to test it pre mix your fuel 50:1 in the tank then fill the autoblend unit run the tank off gas oil mix out and see if the oil level in the autoblend went down you will be running rich if it is working but it wont hurt the motor maybe foal some plugs but thats the only way to know if it is working i just today did this with my 1988 35hp and my autoblend is working! 6 gallons of fuel you should of lost 18oz of oil in the autoblend hope this answers your question!!

Re: Auto Blend questions

please listen to laddies - throw out the autoblend unit - these motors are too good to let them down because of an autoblend failure -which they do without warning . it's simple -unplug it and dispose of it in an environmentally safe way - then just buy a new gas line ( old one will be too short ) and mix 20ml. of oil to every litre of gas - that way you know its getting oil .
the 45hp mercury "classic fifty " ran from 81 - 89 and they are very strong longlasting engines but the autoblend was a disaster that serves 2 environmentally friendly purposes.......

1- it reduces oil consumption at lower speeds
2- it can and will fail without seting off the buzzer and your only clue will be your motor suddenly jamming to a hault and yet another great 2stroke is dead .

I really don't know why everybody is saying bad things about Autoblend... As a mechanic provide me with lots of engine rebuilds... I love them...

Re: Auto Blend questions

I have run an autoblend on a 40HP mariner since '91 without any problems. The boat gets used year round and often in very cold conditions but has always worked for me. I replaced the filter last year just beacuse it had never been serviced. I do monitor the oil consumtion and check the alarm battery when filling the gas tanks. Straight gas keeps much longer than pre-mix and can be transfered to other small engines when needed. Sorry to say it but I like the system as an alternative to pre-mix on older motors. One word of caution. Never run an autoblend out of petrol. It will fill the carbs with straight oil and foul the plugs in short order.

how did you clean the carbs after this happened? I believe the same thing has happened to my motor and it will not start now...

Take the " auto blend " off the boat.----Heave it over the fence as far as you can.-----Not a reliable unit at all.
