I heard a rumor that you can get map updates for marine nav.

Re: Auto GPS on the water?

I think you need different software to do the on-water stuff as well as marine maps, etc.

At least that is the case with my Garmin GPSmap276c dual application unit. I have to switch between road and marine/offroad applications as well as maps.

It wasn't difficult to use my marine GPSmap units on the road, but they, of course, lacked any features other than simply showing you where you were, speed, elevation, etc. They also lacked internal batteries for hiking.

I really like the triple capability of the 276C as a water, road and hiking handheld unit. I am sure Garmin has newer models with those, as well as new, features.

Re: Auto GPS on the water?

I agree with JB. Until this year I always used Loran C as my main ocean navigation.
Since Loran C was shut down in February had to use GPS this year so decided to take the auto Garmin GPS. I put in on the Co Pilot side and use my two older GPS unit for routes, headings and and distance, or range and Bearing.

Took a look at the auto GPS and the shore line was so bad I could not see San Francisco Bay.

However if you set waypoints it will still take you there.
