Last season when Carl got his drivers license and car, I put him on our policy. His car only had liability. The rates went up to about 125 more a month. I expected this since he is a teen driver.

Now this is the part that torques me off. After he found out that his car will not run without oil, I had it removed from the policy. So thinking I just saved 125 a month by dropping his car, my insurance jumped up another 75 making it 200 more a month than it was before he had his license.

Called Allstate to see what was up and why. It appears that they automatically had to carry full coverage on him since it was possible for him to drive my wifes car. I told them that no way is he ever allowed to drive the Intrepid since it is my wifes only transportation. We do not take the risk of her car being destroyed because it is the only transportation that this family has. (except for the company van).

Their poor excuse is that he could steal the keys and go joy riding and tear the car up. So I asked them that if someone else steals the car, does that mean its not covered. They said of course its covered for theft. DUH DUH DUH I'm friggin confused  I feel that I am paying for an unjust applied coverage.

Then when I got him another car, the rates dropped because now he has his on transportation. Well that car is now down because of his stupidity of doing neutral drops which took out the transmission. I have left the car on the policy to keep my rate a little lower.

Does other Ins. Companys do the same thing. If not, I'm going to have to change companys. I just hate to change because I have had my insurance with allstate for about 20 years now. This company will not work with me on this matter.

Any thoughts?......Thanks

You would have to exclude Carl as a driver on the policy in order to not have to pay for him. That's why its cheaper for Carl to be in his own car (liability), otherwise he's being insured for the Intrepid (full coverege). As far as I know SS all companies go by this policy. If Allstate won't exclude him as a driver than other companies will.

I also dumped Allstate, when I inquired about thier last car rate increase of $57 a half-year I was told that the actual policy didn't increase, what I was paying for was the agents life style increase and cost of doing business, needless to say we dumped Allstate after one call and quote from Geico, seems they don't have local agents to pay for, we got better coverage and saved $500 a year, easy choice, did the same with homeowners insurance, and we had Allstate for over 35 years. My son and daughter did the same, saved $550 and $375 a year. It pays to shop around. :)

I think I'm going to go shopping. It's sad that having a long term policy should have some merrit for a discount.

I tried to exclude him, but they can't until he is 18. Currently his license is suspended until further notice. Probably until he is 18!. Now why should I have to pay about a thousand more for nothing?

Yep, gotta go get some quotes for the whole shabang. House, Boat, and Car.

I don't know, crab. I had State Farm do exactly the same thing to me about 35 years ago. My first notice was when the bank sent me a letter wanting to know why I had cancelled my insurance.
