Auto Paint Question

i'm curious can a person use auto paint from the auto store to paint a boat as long as he puts on a good clear coat will it hold up?

Yes with proper prep it will last fine.

I used a DuPont urethane base clear on mine, works great. One note, the guys at my paint store stressed that you let it cure for 45 days before leaving it in the water more than 24 hours. It has to do with the paint "off gassing". According to them, the water will keep it from "breathing" and can cause delamination. I followed their advise and have been extremely happy. Once nice thing about the automotive paints is the endless choices of colors and the metalics. PREP is key, you CANNOT get a good job without it....lots of sanding, but it will pay off. Take a look at what I started with and how it came out. Good luck!

Hello m8s...

erm.. No Auto or Marine paint will last " submerged " in water ( freash or salt ).

It Will Blister ! I dont care what kind of Finish "paint" you use..it Will Blister.

Above waterline is okies to put whatever you want on.

Im sure Im gonna pick up some flack..but Trust in Ol' YD.. I know...

Perfect...all this info is a great help. i''m having this guy paint my boat with auto paint. he has painted boats before so i hope he does a good job. he's had my boat over a month so far so i think he's doing the prep job pretty good. well see when i get the boat back.

Kiwifisher is right about constant immersion.....sorry I didn't mention that. Auto paint should only be used on trailered boats or ones on lifts. As he mentioned works great on top sides too.
