Automotive Paint??

I have a 1961 feathercraft and i am wanting to do a new paint job but do you have to use a epoxy or special marine paint or can you use just a automotive paint with a etch primer on the bottom and sides of the hull. And what about the inside of the boat along the inner walls and benches to give a full original paint job.

Ayuh,... For a tiny tinny, I'd use Rustoleum....

For larger hulls, I use Martin Seynour, Prizim fleet paints...

Welcome to iBoats!

One of our PROS, prepared this "Sticky" on the absolute BEST way to prep your TIN boat for paint.

Other DIY'ers on the forum have sanded, washed down with 50/50 White Vinegar and water, Primed all bare spots with Self Etching Primer of their choice, and then used Rustoleum Professional Oil Based Paint.

Others have Used all different kinds of paint.

My preference is Rustoleum you can go to Page #10 in my Restoration thread listed in my signature below and find my preferred method for applying the Rustoleum Paint. You can also search for lakelover and see his GREAT results using my method.

Just remember, The KEY to any successful Paint Job IS PREPARATION!!! Also I would HIGHLY recommend that you PRIMER the entire boat and NOT rely on the OLD painted surface. Using the correct Primer will almost always ensure proper adhesion of the final Paint IF the surface is PREPPED properly.

my boat is just a small 12ft tin can but on alot of other threads on here people have used just automotive paint on top of a primer then finished off with a couple of clear coats. But can that stand up to being pulled on and off a trailer and sit in the water for at least a full day of fishing. And how much does the rustoleom cost and how much paint would be needed for just a 12ft by 4-5ft boat?

For your little boat I would absolutely go the Rustoleum route. Easily touched up when you inevitably bang it up. It will certainly hold up fine on your trailer boat. Rustoleum is easily found at Lowes, Home Depot, etc and is less than $20 a quart.

I have an old Herter's fiberglass boat with an aluminum top someone else painted with a brush with what looks like plain old house paint and it hasn't help up real well but better than I would have thought. I'm going to strip it and clean up the aluminum and see how it looks unpainted. I may even try to polish it.

My fiberglass hull, no gel coat, was painted with rustoleum rattle cans and it help up well. I just did a quick touch up with the same and it looks pretty good for now. I am thinking of using auto paint for the hull too since I have some Imron that I can get for $0. I was wondering how well it would work too. Free might not be for me if I'm just going to have to repaint it the next season.

If i use the rustoleum do i need to use a clear coat or any other type of finish or is it a good finish.

I wouldn't. You don't really need it and it would make future touch ups more difficult.

A clear coat is not needed on a boat. I would suggest you add a paint hardener for more durability, however.

Tractor Supply (TSC) is another source of these paints/hardeners.

This Might help...

Ok Here's my recommended formula for Rustoleum Paint for Roll n' Roll application.
This Should yield one THIN coat on a 14-16 foot boat hull. For aluminum boats use alodine or a Self Etching Primer on ALL bare aluminum spots and Rustoleums Bare Metal Primer on the rest. If you have Deep sides you may need to adjust the amount of Paint you buy. IF your boat is NOT left in the water for MORE than 3-4 days at a time, this will work fine. This is NOT for boats left in the marina for the season.

This is for Roll n' Roll Application

Final sand with 180 grit and wipe down with acetone.
Two coats of Primer. Wet Sand with 320 grit between coats. Wipe down with acetone
Do NOT put Hardener in the Primer.
Roll n' Roll technique is the same. Thin coats!!!

2 cups Paint
NOTE: This does not come in a MYRIAD of colors. However you can TINT your own by using Artists Acrylic OILS from any Art supply store. Cut it with Acetone and then mix it in. I made "Baby Blue" for mine doing this. Worked Great. You can GOGGLE how to tint paint to get the colors you'll need for the shade you want. It is NOT THAT HARD, NOT EASY, but not that hard.

1/4 cup of ACETONE or if the temp is over 80 degrees use Mineral Spirits
1 oz of Hardener (1/8 cup)(Sold @ Tractor Supply Stores)
Mix paint, Thinner and Hardener "Off & ON" for a 30 minute period, to let the Hardener "COOK" in the Paint

Wet roller with paint an roll out about 4-6 sqare feet. If you can HEAR the paint (Sticky Sound)you are rolling too long. Put the first roller in a Plastic bag and use another roller. wet it out but wring out almost all of the paint and then Re-roll the area you just painted. Use a very LIGHT stroke and the paint should lay down with NO Bubbles!. Put this roller in the bag and use the other roller again. Repeat this process untill the boat is painted. Always do the re-roll with a damp roller with very little paint in it and LISTEN. You will hear the sound that lets you know when it's time to stop. It's kind of a sticky sound.

Let the first coat dry for minimum of 4 hours.
Wet sand with a Scotch Brite pad. Wipe down with Acetone.
Apply 2nd & 3rd Coats Same as First.

This guy use this forumula and technique on his "Tinny" and it came out pretty good I think....

Proper prep + 545 primer + 400g sanding prep + Awlgrip = Best for full paint job IMHO ..

Go the Rusto if you dont have the time/money/location/safety .. etc .. roll and tip thing..

Warning.. You decide what to apply on your surface .. its Hard to get back and recoat ..

Rusto is a "bunt" .. where as True paint is a "Hitter" .. You should have All options open. Depending on your situation ..

While YD is Somewhat correct in his opinion, I don't actually think Rustoleum is a "BUNT"
It is a HIGH quality Acrylic enamel paint that is used in the Industrial world for painting equipment exposed to the elements and with the addition of the Hardener it yields a Higly durable coating for both Aluminum and Fiberglass hulls. And since the the cost difference between Awlgrip and Rustoleum is almost 300% For most DIY'ers I think it is obvious why some would want to choose the Rustoleum. I KNOW the PRO's use Awlgrip a lot and justifiably so, but for a cost savings good product, Rustoleum with the Hardener, is hard to beat.

Don't knock it till you've tried it!!!!

Can the rustoleum that comes in quarts and gallons be sprayed on or only rolled and would a rattle can be just as good for my boat and if so how many would i need to do my 14ft (remeasured) with a beam of 5ft to do the full outside hull and inside.

You COULD use rattle cans but it will NOT be as durable as spraying or rolling it with the added hardener. I have NO IDEA how many it would take but I would hazard a guess that it would take at least a dozen, where as one quart of the Oil based paint will do TWO coats. Again, If you go to Page #10 in my "My Flamingo" thread in my signature line below you will get all the info you need for painting your aluminum boat with Rustoleum. It covers both Spraying and Rolling techniques.

k thanks if i buy the rustoleum in quarts will i have to thin it out and if so with what then do i need to use a etching primer on the whole boat boat or just on bare spots. then can i even just use a normal primer. the reason i ask is that today i went to the store and while i was there i looked at paint and they sold rustoleum rattle can primer and is said it was for metal ,wood and some other stuff so would that work if i even did a 50/50 viniger water bath for it.

thanks for all the help WoG i hope to get it painted within a couple of weeks and when i get started i wil for sure try to post a new thread on the full restoration its a quickie due to the design of my boat which is the one in my avatar and if you go to feathercraft.net and go to the serial numbers then to the bottom of the page and go to 1961 then scroll down to the Cisco ll then when it was bought it had the option of a full steering and dash(was installed). And by the way great job on the flamingo hope to see it all the way again.

Thanks for the help i am going to get it done hopefully by end of the month but dont be suprised if i dont get it done. and do you think it would be a good idea to change the title of my thread saying this is a resto in progress or just and to the current one or just keep it eh way it is. another thing i would like to do is to paint the engine also along with the boat, but how would i go about doing this would i just use rustoleum again or do i need a special paint to do it and how would i go about painting the logo the reason i ask about the logo is that the engine is 1960 johnson 18hp and back then they took pride in there work and it was all hand painted on the hatch then the logo also sticks out like it does. and same questions on how to paint it i would like to paint as original as possible. oh and another question i had was about the logo on the boat it. has a metal plate that has the logo on it that is riveted on and it was wondering how would i paint it on it is a feathercraft boat and the logo has some fine details on it and is it aluminum also and if so how could i ever put i primer on the places that need painted only. but for the engine painting i would like to do something like the sea king project by TregoMark and amazing job by the way. i wil try to post some pics. about what i keep going on about to make more sense.
