i was thinking, since i have a 4 cylinder, 2 stroke outboard, with a distributor and a single coil, couldnt i just get an automotive tach, hook it up, set it to 8 cylinder, and it would read properly on the 4 cylinder?

since a 2 stroke fires twice as often, it would fire the same rate as V8 4 stroke, right?

You are correct as far as you go, GF, but instruments made for automotive use very rarely stand up to a marine environment.

I don't think it is worth the risk. Get a boat tach.
