i am in the process of replacing the plywood floor of a 1977 18' invader tri-hull once i finish pouring the foam. i have already replaced stringers, transom. my question is i noticed a black coating on the fiberglass that butts up to the plywood. could this be undercoating? have any of you guys seen this before? if so after glassing in the floor should i spray this back on? thanks for the help as i have gotten all the knowledge to do this myself from reading this forum

Re: automotive undercoat

I used that evil foam in my jet boat, everything is sealed very well so water can't get to the foam, but there was an area near the stern under the floor where it was exposed. I used under coating to seal it, this was 6 or 7 years ago and I checked it a few weeks ago and no water had gotten to the foam through the under coat yet.

Back to your question though.

If what you see is hard, or like paint, then no, it's just bilge paint, under coat would be somewhat soft.
