autumn river smallies?

Hello:

Several of you have mentioned smallies being very active in the fall. Where do they hide out and what is the most productive bait/technique, etc?

If it makes a difference, I am fishing the Grand River just upstream of Grand Rapids, MI. The river is EXTREMELY clear.

I prefer a pumpkinseed 3" grub on a black jighead. I toss it off the side of the current, into eddys that preferrably have some boulders.
