Re: aux. motor bracket

Pick your location, drill 4 holes, bolt it on with SS 3/8" bolts, washers and locknuts and use a 5/8" thick plywood backer plate on the inside.

The location should be so that there is no interference with steering cables, electrical devices or swim platforms. When the motor is down the propeller should be below the bottom of the boat, and when up it should be as high as it will go.

If you are restoring a classic, you're good to go. If you want to actually use it I would recommend a new model, since the 1960's versions bounced around a lot and the springs didn't hold too well.

Re: aux. motor bracket

thanks jim. the bracket is already mounted on the boat, it in the 2nd. notch, thitch puts it about 1 &a half inches below bottom of boat- cav plate that is .& in 1 st notch it is about 1&ahalf in . above bottom, 2 nd. notch doesent allow motor to raise to full tilt , so part of leg is still in water, does this hurt anything ?

I'm not sure what you mean about notches. Nor what you mean about full tilt. If you mean you want to tilt the motor up when the bracket is raised up, I would advise against it. The bouncing you may encounter may pull the whole thing off the back of the boat, motor and all.

Kickers on brackets are intended to be kept in the down position at all times. Dangerous if you don't. In the up position, with the boat at rest, the motor should be out of the water. If its not, the bracket is mounted too low on the transom.

You are running a kicker here, not a main engine, and you aren't concerned about planing. Thus the cav plate's location is of little importance, just the position of the prop.

Modern OB brackets have about an 11" vertical travel. Like I said before, the old ones are pretty crappy. If yours won't travel that much, you may not be able to achieve a good compromise.

Re: aux. motor bracket

thanks again jim, yes its a very old bracket and it vibarates bad. will replace soon, ive am running a johnson 8hp. 4 stroke, whitch weighs about 90 lbs.btw the bracket has has 3 bars ,i think they call hindge brackets, top one is straight, middle has notches, bottom one is on springs that ingague tlt notches, suposedly you pull down on bar while lifting motor, whitch i find impossible while on water, so i have been tighting bolts so it wont come undone while trailering. would be nice to have a digatal camerainstead of waiting for film to develope. any way thanks for the help.
