Hi Guys

I've just bought myself an inflatable tender, and I'm thinking of getting an outboard for it; it can take up-to a 4hp.

Question: Would 4hp be big enough to push a 20ft Cuddy Sportsboat (which weighs 1300kg ) as an emergency auxiliary, or am I just waisting my time, in which case I would just get a 2.5hp for the tender (to save overall weight). What's your thoughts?

Thanks
Kenny

on the 20 cuddy, the 4 won't do much more than the 2.5. but if the tender is rated for the 4 buy a 4hp. i have a 2.5 on a 10 inflatable, against wind and waves, 3 to 4 on board it ain't much push power.

I think you need two motors, actually. One for the tender and one for the cuddy. The 4hp maximum for the tender will do almost nothing for your cuddy. If there's any current or wind, you'll probably won't even make way.

I don't know where and how you boat, but if you're in big water, you should have a decent sized auxiliary engine on your big boat. I'd call about 15 hp the minimum. If you need it and there's weather or some other problem while you're out there in deep water on a large lake or the ocean, you're going to want something that will do a job for you. 4hp will just buzz and you won't be going anywhere. In a stiff breeze, it probably won't even turn you into the seas.

Personally, I'd have a 25hp on that cuddy.

A 9.9 will do just fine. They are the most popular engines for sail boats in the 24-26' range. I would not hesitate to use a 9.9 on my 23' CC except that I have twin 110s.
