Auxiliary steering question

I am looking at getting an auxiliary steering kit to go from my Force 120 to my Johnson 9.9 kicker.
Problem is the length of adjustable bar these kits come with.
They are listed as 19" - 22", 23" - 26", 27" - 28" and 29" - 33".
My problem is when both motors are straight, the centers are 28", now, when the kicker is up, the distance is 30".
Come to think of it, I never did measure when the main motor is up.
So, my question is, what length rod should I be going with?

Buy the one that fits when in the running position. Then, take it off when the kicker is tilted up.

Or, be smart and buy a pair of QD ball sockets and a length of SS rod and build it yourself. The "kits" are expensive,look ugly and don't work as good as a homemade one.
