I like to keep it around 25-28 mph....fast than that and unfortunately my first mate (wife) becomes uncomfortable. :(

30-33 mph in the morning when the lake is calm.
22-25 mph in the afternoon when real choppy.

if you are going for best MPG, it is almost always higher than you think. Just above plane is usually pretty bad actually, you need to get a little more hull out of the water and into the power band of the engine. (2 stroke engines in particular have very specific rpm's where they develop the best power and efficiency, and it isn't near the low end)

Interesting observation and one my step-father and I discovered much to our surprise after he'd owned his Hinterhoeller Limestone 24 (below) for a good 15 years.

Turns out on this girl, 3500 rpm is actually more efficient than 3000 - although it seems well up on plane at the lower number... Gawd I love that boat. She's heavy and deep and just a great big water boat - perfect for those days when there's a blow in from across Lake Huron and Georgian Bay is fixing to get nasty.

Ahem...sorry, I digress..

As for the Scout, I drive more by tach than speedo. 2 people and a kid at 3800 get us about 28 mph. Add a couple more people and I need 4100 to get the same speed.

Once every other weekend or so I'll go out alone, trim her up and wring her out for a mile or so to keep her limber. Best I can recall from my landlocked chair at the moment is that it's a blistering ( ) 44 miles an hour or so at about 6000 rpm. Mechanical music that Yammy makes...

I'd really love to fit a fuel flow metering system so I can really understand where my most efficient throttle settings are for any given load or condition. Caniving to get the business case approved by the Domestic Finance Officer...;)

we are also most efficient at 3300rpm which is about 33mph about 3.3 mpg. coincidental. ;) But most of the time we are just idling around. And yes I am guilty of "running the cobwebs" out more than a few times each time we're out.

Pretty excited to get the boat out of storage next weekend and hopefully on the water sometime shortly after that.

usually cruise at 30-35mph... will go near 50 wot, but burns a lot more gas that way. i like to open it up one good time each trip, but thats about it.

this is with a 200 ocean pro on a 21 ft deep v center console.

Re: Average Cruise Speed

I'm starting to feel like I boat like an old man. I have to baby my new boat purchase. My speed 25-30mph gets me where I want to go in the right amount of time. I haven't pulled Skiers or Tubers yet but I can't imaging going any faster than that.

Thanks for the Replies.

Re: Average Cruise Speed

Over in the OMC/Merc forum in a similar thread, member achris posted this very interesting graph for his boat. His exact specs are in his sig (not to be confused with my sig), but a 4.3 in a 20 footer is a pretty common setup here, and I bet similar setups would find similar results.

Here is achris's post

And here is his graph.

Blue line is speed (knots), Pink line is fuel flow (litres per hour), Yellow line is economy (litres per nautical mile.

Best MPG is 3100 to 3700 rpm (21 to 30 knots)....

Re: Average Cruise Speed

The huge hump in the yellow MPG line is where the boat is plowing through the water, almost on-plane. Sadly, when gas prices went up recently, I saw quite a few boaters operating at that speed. I imagine they thought they were saving money...
