Theres a posting on rhode Island craigslist by a marina owner warning people away from 90-115hp 1998-1999.
Is there any truth to this, is this engine prone to be abused ?
As many sports cars aren't just used, they're used up.

He writes
"Avoid Buying: Yamaha Outboard motors 90-115hp built in 1998 and 1999- 2 stroke these motors are very faulty and my customers have experienced many difficulties. "

He seems straight up about it, not trying to sell anything himself.

Hardly statistically valid, Jonesy.

I have heard nothing of the kind, and I hear a lot from people having any sort of trouble.

Around here the Yamaha reputation is intact.

I agree, I am actually leaning towards a yamaha myself.
I think he see's the used up engines.

His point is valid about people selling losers on the internet in general.

Re: avoid certain yamahas

every E-bay motor I have seen was junk.
the 99-98 and some 97 V motors had a water pump issue but it was resolved long ago and most folks never knew it.
the rest ran great, in saltwater areas I would carefully inspect the shift shaft for corrosion on pre 1995 motors.
anymotor will die, my 175 Etec had 15 hours and 14 minutes when a rod came out the block. new powerhead is on its way. doesnt mean the engine is bad just means 17 months I have owned it and the 112 start cycles is most likly not enough use.
gotta cure that with the next one :)
