Hi everyone,
Just a quick stupid question if you don’t mind..
So I acquired a great condition Avon seasport 3.45 and I already have a Yamaha 55hp but I’m told these ribs are 40hp max. 😔 I see there isn’t much weight different, so doesn’t it really matter?

I’ll regularly have 3-4 normal sized people on board

Thanks for looking!

Looks like that boat max engine weight is around 214 Lbs. What does your 55 weigh?

Is that a tiller steering or remote model to start with ? Check which it's the max HP factory stated for that given size. A 30 HP well propped motor should fly that light Rib straight to Mars, 55 HP is darn too much associated weight and power, could achieve a nervous planing attitude and lose control of the combo when speeding. It's entirely up to you if going for such a dangerous water run...

The seasport 3.45 has steering, the helm is right at the bow. The 55hp is within the max weight for an outboard with this rib but I've found a 40hp evinrude anyway, prob go with that.

Thanks

That 3.45 Mtr is rated for max 30 HP motor, It's not the weight of the motor, it's all about Max HP rated for which traducers in power on the water..

Ah thanks for that, my plaque has worn away but I was told by multiple people it was 40hp plus I've seen a few paired up with a 40s..

Do you think It will be OK?

Thanks

Will this be your first experience running overpowered Ribs ? That Rib is not large enough to run a 40 HP that's why the factory recommends max 30 HP, for instance my Sea Rider 340 Mtr Rib it's only rated for min 20 HP motors and if with boating experience max 30 HP motors whether being tiller or remote steering.

It's a great advantage having the central console sitting way up front to compensate a heavier motor weight along an even deck load distribution. If plan boating at speed with 4-5 adults try a 40 HP motor and run the beast till has been tamed...

Hi,

It will definitely be a first.. But to be honest, I'm not interested in going super fast. I just like the thought of having enough power to strap the rib to the side of my sailboat to be get it out of trouble in the event of summit going wrong.

Thanks for your help

You're welcome,

If going boating with say 4-5 up on constant basis and plan towing a sailboat too out of trouble get a 40 HP, is that 3.45 Rib a short or long shaft transom ? Which other HP option is there going down from a 40 HP motor ?

It's a long shaft transome and ill only have 4 onboard max

I've picked up a cheap evinrude 40hp for £250 but I'm on the look out for yamaha 30hp. Ideally I'd like to put mount on for the 40hp on my boat and use it as a back up engine.

I like to have backups for my backups 🤣

Thanks

If you can get a Yamy 30 HP to power the 3.45 Mtr Rib with max 4 up prop it right to run towards its max 5500 wot rpm range factory stated. Will need to install an induction hour/tach meter to wot test current factory delivered prop and go to less pitch props to bump wot rpm up if needed, but surely will need going that route to take the max out of that nice combo...
