Anyway, I THOUGHT I understood what I read here about pulling off a steering wheel - loosen the nut, then somehow pry it off.

CRACK! OH *&#$! Yup. I didn't pry it off. I busted half the steering wheel hub off. I... uh... don't think I understood the directions.

Ummm.....

So what are you doing about the broken helm? Even with a new wheel, something is broken. Having "half the steering wheel hub" broken off is no way to go out on the water.

Time for a new helm.

Mark, it was the composite garbage on the steering wheel "ring" that broke, not the hub or the helm. The helm is intact; well, the threads on the center thing are a little worn at the top, but there is plenty of thread for the nut to bite down on... so far.
