My Briggs and Stratton 5hp 4stroke seems to be leaking small amounts of oil down the side where the petrol tap is. Could this be something fixable, no problem, or is it almost certainly a sign of a cracked sump and not fixable economically?

photos are good ...no hosting needed I have the manual/parts lists exploded diagrams...if the leak is small I am sure the texan oil fields can keep up .....

O.k. I'll do a photo tomorrow.

But not much to see. Just an oily plate, I guess.

You know how there's kind of circular steel plates built in there so's the thing can rotate? Well the top of the topmost one of those gets oily and oilier until it finally drips off it and drops down to the floor - well actually it lands on the housing above the prop.

I clean it off scrupulously dry and a few hours later it's oily again.

And all this is on a stand in a shed. I haven't been able to start it so it hasn't run, doesn't run, doesn't go on a boat, nothing. It sits on the stand and drips...

I am on the verge of throwing it away as junk.

the only time these are hard to start is if they have been stored with the plug towards the floor or if they are not in neutral.
Satrt it first take out plug ..clean but only a 20 thou gap .. check you have a spark . put some petrol down the plug hole ensure you new petrol.....and remember when it does start and you rev it up it wll seem to miss as you are taking it over 4000 rpm and the limiter cuts in,,,,,this is not a fault will not happen on the water ,,,great motor I love them

Here's a pic of the oily plate:

This motor has been stored in all kinds of ways - it was stored just before I got it in such a way that all the oil ran out.

Why's that matter? Because it oils up the plug? Well it's got a new plug. But I didn't set the gap. But it must be near 20 thou.

Or did storing it that way create more problems that might account for the non starting?

What about the revving out and cutting out? That'd be only when in gear, surely? On the water it can't rev out when in gear because of the resistance of the water. But in neutral it can rev out whether on land or on water, surely?

I'm pleased to hear you're fond of these motors. It gives me some reason to believe it is worth my while sticking with it and trying to fix it.

well you dont seem to have much sympathy with machinery or know whats right or wrong,,, if the plug gets pointed at the floor not only does the pug get oily but the induction tract gets full of oil...always store upright or with plug pointing at the sky.

It will cut out ( misfire ) at any time if it goes over 4000 rpm as it has a electronic rev limiter ... the prop keeps it to about 3800 on the water.
what you need to do is take plug out ...open throttle ..pull over about 20+ times . put some fuel in plug hole and gap plug to 20 thou and then try to start it...in neutral or the exhaust valve depressor will not release....
