Finished a powerhead rebuild a while back, but now have a mysterious water leak - see this thread for a picture: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=199410

I have a question about the water tube that goes from the water pump to the powerhead.

1. Is this replaceable? How do I know if it is bad - mine feels a little "floppy"

2.Where does this tube connect to? I am trying to see where the water actually comes out the top and then goes into the powerhead.

I got this mysterious water leak, and I really am at a loss at this point.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
SM

If you've mentioned the engine in question, I've apparently overlooked it. And this mysterious water leak..... we'll need more information on that also.

It's all in the link above, including picture to show exactly where the water is coming from.

Re: WATER PUMP / WATER TUBE QUESTION

The water tube that you speak of runs from the impeller housing up to the power head, via through t stats or pressure valve at higher speeds. I would remove the lower unit, check on the water pump and impeller, and replace and reseal as needed. Check that the grommet on top of the impeller housing isnt lodged in its hole, causing water to be blocked enroute to the power head, and when you hook the lower unit back up, ensure that the water tube slides in where it should straight. While the lower unit is off though, run compressed air or your garden hose through it to flush anything out or any debris.

Re: WATER PUMP / WATER TUBE QUESTION

Take a look at the exhaust housing (midsection) diagram again, an you will see that the water tube connects to a flange at the top of the exhaust tube. The exhaust tube has its own gasket which seals the water tube as well, which may be the problem.

Thanks ezeke. My books don't have that diagram. Is there a place on the internet I can get those diagrams?

I am going to go take a look and see what I find.

Thanks,

Re: WATER PUMP / WATER TUBE QUESTION

Ezeke,
How do I get to those parts??

When I look down where the powerhead normally sits, I see the hole the exhaust comes through, but do not know how to get into the inner parts of the exhaust housing.

Does it have something to do with those 3 srews that are just beneath the thermostat housing??

Thanks,
SM

The link to the BRP parts diagrams is "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e"

You have to disconnect the exhaust housing adapter. If you did not have it off, it may not be the problem, but it is the easiest way to actually inspect the water tube. Usually you just pressure test it.

Re: WATER PUMP / WATER TUBE QUESTION

I can't believe how incredibly STUPID I am !!!!!!!!!!

I pulled the L.U. back off and water tested the tube by showing the water hose on it .... no leaks at the top of it.

Then I am figuring that the water is somehow going over the little wall that houses the drive shaft, and it occurrs to me they gave me the wrong gasket in my gasket kit.

Then after studying the gasket it hits me: I put that dang gasket on wrong side up!!!! Can you get any more stupid than that?????

I flip it over and it now seals off the water way just like it should! How about that.

Anyway, just for my personal knowledge - I now know where the water enters the engine, but where does it exit the engine? Does it go into the exhaust and back out the prop?

Also, should I add a little silicone gasket sealant to that little area for the powerhead gasket? I am thinking that I do not need it, but would like to be sure.

I am going to put her back together and see what happens. I will let you know.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions!

Re: WATER PUMP / WATER TUBE QUESTION

We have been using NAPA Permatex Spray-A Gasket Sealant on gaskets like that for some time. It is labeled #765-1224.

Everyone has made mistakes, especially with the PLUG. The important thing is that we get them fixed and move on.

Tight lines!
