I?ve got a 1999 bravo 3 that is leaking gear lube oil from either the hose or barbed connector at the bell housing with the drive in the raised position. I have reviewed the #11 MerCruiser manual and I?m thinking about repairing it myself, but have a few questions for those who have done this before.

Per the manual, the bell housing has to be removed. Is it necessary to have any or all the special tools such as the tapered plug tool for the water hose (91-43579), the u-joint bellows sleeve removal tool (91-818169) and the bellows sleeve installation tool (91-43577)?

Also, the u-joint bellows has never been replaced and it appears I would be a DA not to replace it while I have the bell housing removed, although it appears to still be in great shape. The boat is stored indoors year round with the drive always in the down position.

Re: B3 Gear Lube Hose Replacement

the water hose insert tool is pretty much a must have as is the retaining ring installation tool.
I usually use the same slide hammer attachment to remove the ring as I use for gimbal bearing removal cause its usually handy.
I cant remember which models used a plastic fitting at the transom shield and which did not so I always carefully cut them off with a razor knife, now.
use only the correct snapper clamps and the merc hose, which you will have to cut to the correct lenth.
usually here in the salt pond a have to destroy the water hose insert to remove it so you may wish to have a spare on hand.
