so the last project i had was thr reinell, now its a celebrity crownline, re did all the teak, polished and buffed her good, got the motor running good, now to the last issue, I replaced the lower unit water pump, reinstalled the drive unit ready to hit the water, put the muffs on her and noticed i only have forward and neutral, no reverse, its like the cable doesn't have the throw for reverse. the cable is tough to operate by hand and still cant get the throw for it. i believe its a cable or maybe misaligned? any input would help. 1988 celebrity crownline 22ft 5.7 merc

Sounds like you didn't have the prop held when the drive was installed (Figuring Alpha drive). Put the throttle in full forward and pull the drive out enough to disengage. Turn the prop counter clockwise until it locks in place. Put a bungie cord holding the prop in the counter clockwise direction. Reinstall the drive

I'll give that a try. I hope thats it. then she is ready for the water. cosmetics stuff after that. anyone know who refurbishes digital dash gauges? sunburnt real bad.

correct me if I'm wrong but when i had the ear (water)muffs on and had it in forward gear i could hear a groan. i assume the coupler or gimble bearing is on its way out.

So far as the gauges I don't know of any but should be able to find something by google. With it being the face you could try the stuff used to clear up headlight lenses.

As for the groan, it could be it was part way in gear and the clutch was making the noise. Fix your shift issue and if it continues let us know, and we'll try some more.

Go to the top of this section and select Adults Only section. Then select Mercruiser, and inside the Merc section is some videos and how to's
