Re: Back in far enough!

.......Next time I would suggest disconnecting all straps and cables before launching the boat. Then I have the wife loop the rope around the front and back of the boat.........

I'd like to see you disconnect all straps and cables on a roller trailer.

FYI OKANAGANGUY
Ropes on boats are referred to as lines.

The loop thing is called a cleat.

The front is called the bow.

The back is called the stern.

Now you truly know everything, have a nice day.

I just figure I worked so hard to get the bruises and scars I should share the experience along with the humour. Everybody does something stupid eventually. The question is how bad is it gonna hurt..... :D

I mostly look here to find out things to avoid. I'm glad people post stuff like this. My most useful thing in life nowadays is to teach my kids and grandkids not to do some of the stuff I did in the past.

Not much of that has to do with boating though ; )

Re: Back in far enough!

I can't wait to hear OKANAGANGUYs story when he's disconnected all the ties, starts backing up and a dog or kid runs behind his unit and he has to slam on his brakes..... Like someone said earlier, THUD!!!!

New to the forum but I have been boating since I was 2yrs old - 30 years ago. This has got to be the dumbest way to launch your boat. What if the motor doesn't start? What if the plug is out? What if someone decides to drive their boat behind you? Or again, what if a child runs behind you?

My only advise to people launching is be curteous, and be calm. Everything else will fall into place.

Re: Back in far enough!

I think I have a one up on you here...

I was moving my fuel tank up to the bow (distributing weight a bit more evenly... stern is very low) and putting in some L-brackets to secure it... wouldn't want it flying out from under there. :) I ran my new extended fuel line to the bow... clipped it up under the cap... went and turned around.... walked to the stern... and tripped over a package of zip ties... and fell out of the boat...

...

...

On my head...

...

...

In my driveway.

So here's Mr. Cool Guy on his head in the driveway looking like yesterdays meatloaf. Nice road rash on the noggin, pride diminished, and laughing at the same time. And broken sunglasses to boot!

Ladies and gentlemen... drinking and boating are NO GOOD TOGETHER! Even 1 beer when you are in your driveway miles away from the water.

Re: Back in far enough!

Well.. to give everyone kicks and giggles...

It happened again last night. This time while taking the wooden bech out of the back... had a great idea to move it up closer to the middle to try and take some weight out of the back of the boat.

took off the seat... put it down, stood up... and tripped backwards over the back of the boat over the transom and onto the ground.

I am going to buy a harness and clip to rig to the middle of the floor. If this keeps up I will have too many brain injuries to operate the machine :):eek:

But yes. I laughed again. And so did my neighbour. (Obviously VERY concerned.) And so did my wife. (Expected) and I think I heard a cheeky squirrel who may have gotten a kick out of it.

The alternative is gym mats all around my boat space.

Like they use in High Jump. I'd be too tempted to pop the bubbles on the wrap :D

Re: Back in far enough!

The guy slipped on a slimey rock and landed on his ***. I would imagine that almost everyone here has done that. Do we all have to tell the story?? I guess...if it makes you feel better! I have a sense of humor and I am sure that it was funny to see as long as no one got hurt. It sounds more like inexperience than anything, and hey that is cool we all have to learn some how. I personally don't think that slipping on a rock is fourm worthy. Maybe I should write about the time I stepped on a fish hook and it poked my toe. I am sure you all would love to hear about that.

Sweet, I am glad we have a boating genius here. I bet you can divide by zero and stuff.

Re: Back in far enough!

Last year, first time of the season out we had our granddaughter with. Threw us out of our normal routine. Got out on the lake and was putting around when the granddaughter said " is there supposed to be water in here". Two seconds later I was in the water with transom plug inhand. Had to go under the water to put it in since it's a deep V and I HATE cold water.

This last of 4th of July weekend the wife, daughter and daughters friend were at the beach and came back with a story. A guy with a nice new boat and big a## outboard was backing down the landing. The landing is fairly flat, but he stopped and the boat slid back on the trailer. Planted the skeg on the cement with the point of the boat facing the sky. Hooked the winch to the bow eye and cranked it down with it crashing down on the trailer.

We all have thing happen or have seen them. Hopefully we can learn from them and maybe get a good giggle as well.

Exactly, with 100's of incidences of dismay, if we remember just one while in a similar situation and save(d) ourself's from a re-occurance, it was worth posting.

Re: Back in far enough!

This was the first time I launched my new boat. We were in our development at a private ramp, 3 kids swimming at the dock were the only others around. I backed in fine, just not quite deep enough to get boat into the water. No problem, my wife can just launch me and then go park. I unhook the bowline from the trailer, she backs up and floats me away.

At that point I realize, THE BOAT KEY IS IN THE TRUCK!

I was making good time toward the other side of the cove. She jumped out to see what I'm yelling about. We realized there is no chance she could throw the keys to me, I can't swim so that's out, D'oh we don't have a paddle on board yet. I ended up asking one of the boys swimming to bring me the key. To their credit all volunteered and none of them laughed. Ahhh, live and learn! At least I didn't do like a friend. He was by himself launching at an empty ramp, no one else around. He jumps in the boat to move it and tie down to the dock. At that point he realizes his truck is running and the reverse lights are on! Good thing he had a stout e-brake.

A;ways have that paddle on board.... damn thing can be very very handy in sticky situations.

I lost the key to my lock on my trailer this week. Cut it off with a pair of bolt cutters. Found em in the truck at work this morning.

C'est la vie.
