Been a while since I hung out here!!
I was out on majestic Lake Erie today with my trusty 1974 Caravelle, with a Mercruiser 165 IL 6.
It’s been about 3 months since I had the boat out last, engine hadn’t run at all. At the ramp it was very hard to start which was expected as I’m assuming my fuel pump had some catching up to do. Eventually I got it started but anytime we got her up over 2k rpm I’d get a back fire or two followed by a stall. Would start back up just fine. Then after an hour or two putzing around different fishing spots and cruising around Downtown Cleveland, I was able to hit pretty much wide open throttle and plane with no issues.
I’m wondering if anyone knows the probable cause of the backfire, and can explain why after some time running the backfiring stops.
Generally this is how the boat has been since I got it running after a 20 yr hiatus. A backfire or 2 and then runs great. This time it just seemed like the backfiring lasted longer.
Any thoughts let me know!
