Has anyone ever bought a part from Stone & Sons Marine? They have a part that I need and I've been looking for some background info on them before I purchase this rather expensive part. Can't find any BBB or other type info. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Background info on Stone & Sons Marine

The part I'm looking for is for a 1991 48 hp Evinrude Model# E48ESLEIM. The part is the manual tilt assembly( I believe its called the Touch-trim unit); consists of a hydraulic unit held in place on the engine mount by 2 pins and has a cable attached to it which is operated manually. Its a tilt assist mechanism.
Do you know where to get this part? Since OMC went bankrupt the part has been on backorder. Thanks,

You might try americanoutboard.com

They sell A LOT of outboard stuff...especially hard to find stuff for older motors. Your 1991 is not what I consider old...but it may be worth a try.

Have you investigated what this part costs at other dealers? I know parts at my local Merc dealer are at least 10% higher than a dealer across town. Makes the drive worthwhile most the time....

What state do you live in? I just called HARVEY MARINE in Aloha, Oregon (503) 649-5551. He quoted me $229 for the cylinder and $64 for the cabling. He doesn't have it in stock and would require payment prior to ordering. I didn't ask how long it would take to get the parts in.

Walt

Thanks Walter; I'll follow up on the leads you gave me. I live in Centralia, Wa. I've called several marine parts dealers in the area and they all give me the same answer: the part is on backorder indefinitely. Bombardier bought out OMC not too long ago and its just taking a long time to process some orders. Frustrating, but not much I can do about it. Stone and Sons Marine in Houston, TX gave me a quote of $325; they say that they have the part in stock. The price is outrageous, but I don't know what else to do besides wait for the backorder to come in--may take months.

Don't know what to say....

There are a lot of online options out there...you may have to pay extra for shipping...but do your homework. Harvey's is usually one of the best sources I've found in my area when I have to resort to a dealer. Anyone who's ever read my posts know that I don't take kindly to the gouging dealers reap on their customers.

Walt

Have you tried SEAWAY which is right in your backyard.I have dealt with Stone & Sons on a remote control part for an old elec shift sterndrive .A nation wide searh and a refferal to them by Pelican marine and we had the part from their boneyard.Didn't feel as gouged as we thought we might. They got,but make sure it's new. You need it,but will have to wait for it elsewhere. How much is that wait worth?

Re: Background info on Stone & Sons Marine

Good advice, Walter, and duly noted. Its such a minor part that I need, yet I do need it and its very hard to find. I'll keep digging until I can find it though. I can't believe they want $325 for this part from Stone and Sons! I'm sure they know that the part is hard to find, so they inflate the price. Have you ever heard of this company? They claim to be the biggest source of OMC parts in the world, yet I can't find any reference to them other than their website. Makes me suspicous; I would like to get the part, but don't want to pay the outrageous price; especially from a company that I can't find any info on. Thanks......go get those Columbia River lunkers...theres a lot of them out there....

I'll follow your tip on SEAWAY, Hondon; thanks. **** OMC anyways; and why can't Bombardier follow through with paying off their vendors so the parts can be delivered? I'm sure there are a lot of frustrated dealers and customers, besides me, out there. Have a great weekend and thanks again.....

In an effort to support the dealers out there that are so readily accused of gouging their customers,I offer this. Most dealers offer their parts at a mere 40% mark up as compared to the much more substantial mark up you would see in any other small buisiness.Any other folks in retail care to comment on this?

Number one I do not like to pay retail unless I have too........

But going back to your post... 40% would not be to bad if you had good customer service & people that know how to deal with public & give your money's worth... We hear so many times that parts guy doesn't want to help or dealership just wants to sell new motor... take the time with the customer & assist him with his needs. His time is just a precious as the parts guys... marine dealers are in the peak of the season but as it winds down, they will be wishing they had "Billy Bob" from down the street to keep thier doors open through the winter... Boat shows only can do so much plus they are 4-6 months away.

My ".02" worth... support people that want your business & are there to assist you all year long!!!!!!!

Plus, use "iboats.com"... best fun I have has in years... even though I get some flak sometimes!!!
