I will try to make this as short as possible.

I had the bottom of my boat painted because of a blisting issue on my new 1998 Mariah 26 ft cabin cruiser. The dealer attempted to repair the blisters a couple of times
but this did not work. We desided with the recommendation of the dealer to use a barrier coat and bottom paint to stop the issue. So in December of 1999 we took the boat in
to have the work done. They did the work and we put the boat back in the lake April came and we were diving in the lake so I came up under my boat and the paint was coming off
all over the hull in patches. I called the dealer they told me to return it at the end of the season and they would correct it. I returned it in October of that year and they repainted it.

April of 2001 I dove uder the boat again and again its peeling. I called the dealer they again said return it but they wanted it in warm weather this time. Well it just so happened the outdrive went out
in July so it had to come in anyway. So I requested they do the repair on the paint at that time well their lift broke down and they were hurting just like all other dealers in this area because of a three year
drought and low lake levels. So they requested that I return it in the spring when the waether started warming up.

I dropped the boat off march 10th of this year told them they could have it for the month well a month went by and nothing was done so I pushed them they finally started the work on April 4th but now the
service manager says I will have to pay for the repair. Naturally I refused since it has not been correct since the start. I went to the dealership the next day to talk to the general manager who ws the service manager
when it ws originally painted. I told him I was hot about this and he became very defensive and claimed he would just pull the boat in the parking lot then he and I could go outside and fight? I told him that would not solve the issue
and suggested we could allow the attorneys handle it. He calmed down quickly and we had a meeting with im the service manager and the owner.

The bottom line is they feel it is a problem with the paint (which they chose) and not their work. After contacting Interlux they agreed to pay for the paint to redo the boat but they still refused to provide the labor unless Iterlux would pay
for the repair. The Interlux Rep could not make it to Atlanta to look at the boat until May and since I had already been without the boat for a month this was not exceptable to me. I am currently unemployed so I can't afford any repairs
but the dealer said I could provide the labor myself which I initally agreed to. After thinking about it overnight and talking to my wife we desided it ws not a good Idea to do the work ourselves because of liability. So the next day we went to the dealer and picked up
the boat and told the dealer we would come by and pick up the free paint when it comes in which they agreed to.

I am trying to deside what to do next any suggestions.

Products used

Interlux barrier coat epoxy.
two coats orginally of trilux white bottom paint. dwarrick@mindspring.com

My instinct is that the bottom was not "Primed Properly" interlux has specific primers available for various paints.
2nd, were the blisters repaired properly?

I thought tri-lux was used for aluminum!

Go to www.yachtpaint.com there is a lot of info there.
I think if they screwed up, they fix-up.

The YachtPaint site is a good one. I also have the info on the site in brochure form.

My boat is made of steel...not fiberglass. I can tell you though that if conditions aren't perfect then the paint doesn't hold very long.

A few things to watch out for:

1. The boat must be very clean 1st
2. The right primer should be put on the boat
3. Paint soon after priming so that you know the boat is still clean.
4. Moisture on the boat or soon after painting will spell disaster.
5. Sudden temperature swings can cause problems...An example would be having a boat with a black paint job sitting in the sun and then immediately putting it in cold water. This can cause reticulation or stretching in the paint.
6. I would recommend testing the primer and paint you want to use before putting it on the entire hull of a 26 footer! Good paint is expensive and it takes time to do it right.

boatman

You are all correct I am sure the dealer is at the end of his rope. I guess I should have elaborated I have yet to have any repair done at this dealer that something was not wrong. On the first paint job we took it to the lake to launch it and it was stuck to the trailer. Second painting when we launched they for some reason had replaced the drain plug holder you know the round brass thing that screwed the the hull. Well they for got to seal it. My wife drove it across the lake to our slip some 8 miles when I met her she told me the bildges were coming on. I looked in the engine compartment and water was coming in.

I have had a lot of patients with the dealer over his other screw ups. That is how we got this boat was our previous one was a lemon from day one which the dealer worked on weekly and it broke weekly finally they traded it in for this one after a year. That is why our boat is called the Lemon Aide. It Aided us in getting out of the lemon.

To answer the other questions Trilux is made for Aluminium hulls but is fine for fiberglass. Not what I would have chosen but the dealer did as it is only designed to last for 1 season. When it is redone I pland on using a Micron CSC ot Micron Extra. I plan on having it done at another place. I have cut all ties to the dealer enough is enough.

Thanks for the input

I had a similar problem with the paint peeling after the first season. I was able to trace the problem to the Interlux primer. After researching it I found out that they had a bad batch of their primer only a few years ago and actuallly tried to pull it off the shelves for a while. I had to completely grind all of the paint and primer off and redo it using a basic antifouling paint followed by the Interlux Micron paint. Since then I've had no problems(knock on wood)

Good Luck

Re: Bad bottom Paint Your opinion requested.

As a follow up to this story We plulled our boat out yesterday so the Interlux rep could take a look. It did not take very long before he scraped off some of the paint above the waterline to find out it was never sanded. He took samples from different places in the hull and bagged them up to take with him. His conclusion after the exam was the dealer failed to properly prep the hull correctly and they missed the window for the time between the barrier coat and the bottom paint. He is going back to the dealer today to talk to them he is hoping they will agree to repair it for free as his opinion it was not done correctly. But he is not saying anything I did not already suspect. I will let you know how it turns out.

Canoe Cove Marina on the west coast had the same problem, and that was where all the R&D was done for developing the waterbased paint strippers- non toxic, doesn't burn skin, no fumes- and takes off bottom paint and 2 part epoxies.
ICI markets it under the ''Hydro Stip'' label.check out the companies website www.napierenvironmental.com for a list of distributors

what they did is against the law take them to small claims court. This is called theft of services be sure to take lots of pic
won't cost much to file and you don't have to hire a lawyer either.
Just research it and you can make them pay

Re: Bad bottom Paint Your opinion requested.

You pay a premium to buy a boat from, and have work done at, a dealership. Why? Becuase they are "professionals" and "stand behind" their work. Your delarship appears to be neither.

Take them to court as bubbakat suggested!

The moral of the story? If you can, do the work yourself and follow the directions on the can.

Re: Bad bottom Paint Your opinion requested.

Sorry, I should elaborate. I used the interlux 2000/2001 on my lightly blistered 1982 Glasply and am very satisfied with it. But I put the stuff on right (4 years ago).

Re: Bad bottom Paint Your opinion requested.

I used Interflux on my boat when I rebuilt it in 2000/2001. I didn't use the bottom paint (I go to fast for any paint in my price range to stay on, so I use the cheep stuff ) but I did use red for the hull and white for the deck. The red I used for the hull is like iron, no problems. The white paint I used for the deck is super fragile. The smallest bump and off it comes like a thin skin. I followed the instructions to a “T”. I also had (long distance) help from a car painter friend that knows a lot about boat painting. When it started peeling I was so mad I sat down and wrote a letter (my first for a unsatisfied buy ) to them stating how displeased I was with there product. The only response I got was they would replace the product. Big deal!!!!!!!! All the work to remove everything before I could repaint it would take days and removing all the old paint would go on for ever. Buying the paint would be the least of my problems and I sure as hell wouldn't want to put the same thing back on again. That was the last Interflux product I will ever buy except for a quart of the matching white so I can do my monthly touch ups.
