Bad Breaker?

I purchased a Pro-Line 231 1996. I have a problem with spreader lites on hard top. When switched on the deck lites also come on. The breaker holds for about 2 minutes. It will reset instantly for another 2 minutes. I guess my question would be: could the breaker be getting weak or faulty. This lite arrangment was wired like this from factory. Another idea would be to split the load, seprating deck lites from spreader by installing a seperate switch for deck lites. Thank you for your time.

Re: Bad Breaker?

split them, you also may have a bad breaker. also if you can go to LED bulbs, it will cut the load down tremendously. check your fixtures for rust, corrosion, increases resistance, causing heat and breakers tripping.

Re: Bad Breaker?

If you bought the boat used do not assume this is factory wiring. I agree that you should split the load but don't stop there. Check closely for corrosion issues. If you determine that the circuit is properly wired, and you think the breaker is the problem, don't make the mistake of using a higher rated breaker. It could be that the breaker is doing its job correctly. Adding a larger breaker to a bad circuit can be dangerous and cause a fire. Be sure to check the circuit.
