Looking for ideas here- 1995 115 Evinrude. First had problem this spring, when I took off the boat dropped a cylinder a bogged down. It missed at idle then too, but after cleaning it out by revving the motor with the idle lever, it cleared up. Never happened again. But today I had the boat out for the first time since then and it happened again. I was cruising WOT and it dropped a cyliner and bogged down. I could clean it out but it happened right away again. Both instances happened with the motor warmed up after traveling a couple miles. I tried to foul the plug a bit on the way back to the dock, but after idling while docking it cleaned the plugs up pretty well. There is one cylinder that the plug has lots of oil on the threads and is a bit darker, so I am assuming it's that one.

I am going to replace all plugs. But this seems like a bad coil. What's the best way to test. I can swap coils to a different cylinder. It's tough to get to the wires while it's running. Maybe get it to miss, then stop, pull off the wire, and try to go again? I am also going to clean up all the grounding points tonite. Any ideas? Powerpack? I am reviewing th CDI troubleshooting guide tonite as well. Thanks!

Yes, it sounds like a bad coil dropping out under a load. Swap them and see if the problem follows...

Took the boat out again this morning. Ran it for 20+ minutes and it wouldn't drop the cylinder. Finally I stopped and sat for 10 minutes or so to heat soak everything, and when I took off it started missing. I checked which cylinder, then swapped with another coil. It missed again, but the miss stayed at the same cylinder. So it's not the coil. I then switched plugs and it did it on the same cylinder again. Looks like a CDI problem to me? It's not a fuel issue, it will run WOT, cut out for just a second, run WOT again. All plugs are uniform color, none are lean. The bad cylinder plug will get oiled up a bit when it cuts out. Time for a new CDI? Thanks!

Mine did that and it was the power pack.. Not saying thats your problem but is sure sounds identical to mine.
