bad crankshaft 75HP

I have a damaged rod bearing on my crankshaft. The surface of the crankshaft is not deep scratched, but it is also not very good. (slightly rough & fine pittings)

I tried it with another (used) rod bearing but it makes a knocking noise. Is there a possibility for me (with exception of a new crankshaft?)

Does "oversized" bearings exist? A bearing with bigger pins?

thank you for your assistance
kird

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

Please post your model number, so we can find out what year 75hp you have.

What happened to the crank?

I'm afraid they don't make oversized bearings like they do for autos. The reason is that the bearing surfaces are usually hardened or chromed since they're effectively roller races. So you can't regrind them without replating or case hardening them.
You should measure your rod and throw to determine where the wear is. If the marks come off with a polishing with crocus cloth (or ~1000 grit paper), then it's probably servicable. The worst is a vertical scratch, which will catch a roller.
If worst comes to worst, you can have your crank reconditioned. Good used is normally cheaper though.
NEECA Reconditioning
Reconditioned cranks

the outborder is a 1985 model (BJ75ELCO)

the damage of the crank surface is not very strong, but the crank is now tiny undersized.

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

Take it to a good machine shop and let them build it up and turn it back down to spec.

when this would be my intention, I would not write here..........

Ok, the question again: Does oversized rod bearings exist?

kird

It is possible to get loose needles in different sizes, through the bearing industri, but they wont fit into cages. An automotive repair machineshop might be able to help you, but on this side everything they have usually is metric. Then you will have to file the openings in the cage up. Normally - at last - when the cranck journals are damaged, they are usually no longer round. This motor uses same cranckshaft as several other - I would try to get a used one.

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

Hello G DANE,

of course I try to get a used part, but at this time I have no luck.

I was also the opinion that all parts are in inch measure, but the needles are metric. The diameter are exact 4.00mm.
(the cranks 30.00mm, the rod holes 38.00mm....)

I was very surprised......
maybe because the motor is made in belgium?

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

The diameter of the rod bearings in my '63 Johnson are 4mm. Not everything in the US is metric.
Sorry, I didn't realize you were in Germany. I know parts are very expensive and hard to get over there. It's bad enough here in Canada. :)
Like bubakat said, find a machine shop that will build the journal up, and then grind it back down to standard size.

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

Hello Paul Moir,

I searched for a machine shop that build the journal up and then grind it back down to standard size - example: http://www.motorensuche.com/ - a german company, they want 1161 Euro (approx. $1450) for that service!

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

Kird: $1450 is ridiculous! They probably don't know what they're doing anyway unless they've had a lot of experience building up moderate carbon, through hardened, stuctural shafts that flex a lot. Probably still a lot lower cost than a new one over there.
Our price for that repair is only $240, including the special size bearing, matched to your connecting rod(resurfaced by us, if you wish) at factory NEW clearances. Don't worry about a soft surface-they're through hardened. We warranty for two years against bearing failure or shaft breakage. All you have to do is be certain it gets oil!!
Our website is neecaprecisions.com; email is neecaprecisions@AOL.COM. Phone is (US) (860) 683-1317.

Re: bad crankshaft 75HP

Ouch!

If I were facing that, I would go with GDANE's solution then. To only have the crank turned down should not be too expensive. I've had trouble finding small size needles from bearing suppliers. FAG for example only makes them 5mm and larger. You would want to find needles 4.25mm or smaller, so you aren't taking too much out of the crank.

EDIT: NEECAPRS: I gave a link you (neecaprecisions) above. Unfortunetly, he's in Germany. It might be worth it still...

Paul Moir: Thanks for the referral. I saw your link, but, Kird said it wasn't very useful. Don't know why, so, I thought I'd give him something that started out on the home page. He probably didn't need that!! Thanks again. :)
