Re: Bad exhaust Bellows?

how much force is required to expand the bellows when re attaching?
I dont have the equipment or skills to make one like in the stickies section, but I was thinking of modifying some BBQ tongs
Just depends how much outward force is required as to how sturdy they need to be
You may get lucky and it only came loose and no damage to bellow and since after being strected for 3 years job should be easy, might even be able to reconect it without taking drive off.

Re: Bad exhaust Bellows?

false information ,again. bellows are not damaged by raising the drive all the way.
You say no way bellows can be damaged from drive coming all the way up then why did his do that while triming up? Maybe because bellows not installed right or trim coming up to far.even on some boats trim will come up so far that it will damage swim platform.

Re: Bad exhaust Bellows?

ok well maybe it was a coincidence, I mean in order for my tri-hull to really sit up I have to lift the bow up otherwise theres so much drag from the front fuel economy goes down the toilet.

I have another month left on my slip lease, you think its ok to run it like this until its home and I can work on it?
I just noticed some water in the bilge when I got back so I was worried about a leak but that might have just been normal splash through the side vents

im a worrier :)
Hey do some research on this site about people leaving exhalst bellows off for years, and some people actually perfer it,you will have to pull it off though,i wouldnt suggest it but alot of people sure say its not needed.you could leave it off untill you have to do the whole bellows set again.really type it in and check out the threads.a little louder, but not as loud as captians call exhalst.

:( what have i started lol

So - I guess ill look into replacing or re-attaching the exhaust bellows
Im sure ill have to remove the outdrive but hopefully not the lower unit, some of those bolts were pretty rounded
thanks

Probabally just need to reattach it. Mine popped off the drive side a couple years ago, didn't require drive removal just a few minutes, my hands and a screwdriver. Clamped it back on and havn't had another issue with it since them. Its a boat, stuff vibrates loose all the time.

wouldnt that be nice! I'll certainly take a look before i get into it

So what is that bellows for then? Just to channel exhaust down to the prop area or wherever it comes out normally? high pressure exhaust???

Yes that is what it does..........direct the exhaust gases down thru the prop.

Not high pressure tho.......It does get restricted in the manifold/risers and out drive...but its realy an open exhaust system thats going down in the water to make it quiet.

Start your boat outa the water and listen how loud it is.

Good luck and keep an eye on the bilge for water!

Well kinda yea...every boater should keep an eye on the bilge for water.

You were just saying earlier that there was water in the bilge.... Find that issue if there is one But...THE EXHAUST BELLOW BEING OFF WILL NOT LET WATER IN YOUR BILGE!

Matter of fact...i have what is called an exhaust tube on my boat....which its conected to the gimble housing but not to the drive.

When you at full down trime it's closed up...but when it's up trim it opens a gap bettween the drive and housing. Been like that for two yrs now.

Good news indeed! I think i'll fix the bellows if I can do it without taking off the outdrive
Otherwise i'll run it like this for the next 6 weeks thewn fix it
thanks for all the advice and entertainment

But have you check your trim limits, and the ram length? You know that can make you alternator explore and flatten your carburetor....

Sorry, couldn't resist....

Back at ya.....

Re: Bad exhaust Bellows?

haha dont do that ill probably believe you!

So got the boat out of the water and checked the bellows. They actually seemed fine
One of the rings was a little loose so I tightened that up but it was definitely on

I dont know really. It did seem to be 'splashing' less under speed. kind of the same maybe a little less under idle
I read something about some "flapper" that means its going to push more exhaust out through the exhaust near the transom when idling, then more through the prop under speed????

Another vid -

Nar, that's not what the exhaust shutters are for! The shutter lives up in the top of the exhaust pipe, just below the exhaust elbow at the end of the manifold... When the run is running, the shutter is held open by the exhaust pressure. If the engine should stop running unexpectedly while under way, there is a risk of the backwash shooting up the exhaust and into the manifold, then into the cylinders.... That's not good. So the shutters are set-up so that they try to stop as much water as possible shooting passed them..... That's all.... Nothing to do with directing the exhaust.... Crazy talk....

Re: Bad exhaust Bellows?

In your video......Thats the water coming out of the idle releive ports on the drive....Normal

When you rev the motor more water will get pushed out the prop. On our pontoon with the I/O 4 banger the water comes out more on the starboard (Right) side more than the left when out of the water on muffs running. Least path of resistence!

Good Luck!

Re: Bad exhaust Bellows?

I told you I was a worrier :)
I dont know I just dont remember it splashing that much before. Tightening that clamp may have helped

I also dont remember the depthfinder on the stern making that much of a rooster tail at speed. Makes me wonder if my trim has changed alot
