Hi,

Posted earlier regarding a 140 Evinrude that I recently aquired that I know sat for 2 years without proper storage for the fuel. I tried like heck to get all of the old fuel out but unfortunately I think varnish has made it into the system. No power, coughs, sputters, and dies. I'm sure its not running on all cylinders. I'm going to get a gauge to check compression for the 4 cylinders. What problems am I looking at here and how involved is it to fix?? What part of the fuel system should I attack 1st?

Thanks in advance

well to get it running you have three things.. consider the motor a tripod with the legs being compression, spark, and fuel. knock out one of the legs and the tripod falls over. first check compression. numbers should be within 10% of each other. next check for spark on all cylinders, stick a screwdriver into the boot and hold it 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from plug, crank and look for spark. works great at night. change plugs they are cheap enough. next, take the carbs apart and clean them totally. every orifice. blow everything out with compressed air forwards and backwards if possible. get a rebuild kit for each carb. change all fuel lines, change the inline filter under the cover too. dont use any old fuel system components. if you can take apart your fuel pump, do so and clean it too. reassemble and flush the fuel tank with methanol or gas. dump it out. best bet is to just get a new tank. one thing i would highly recommend is a canister type water seperator after the tank and before the bulb. ive gotten water several times from gas stations. rebuilt my motor once because of it. just got done changing and cleaning my fuel system due to a deteriating line. later.

First things first. Your gonna have to rebuild your carbs. Get a carb kit for your motor and if you have a manual you can install it yourself. You should run 87 octane w/a GOOD marine oil. A compression test is a good idea to see where you stand.

Dutch
