Hey guys I am having a problem with my 2008 Q4 Tahoe not starting. I replaced the starter but where I went wrong was I got the new starter at O Rileys ( I know bad mistake ) But the new starter / solenoid only had 2 main post one where the old one had 3 (one for the postive battery lead w/ 90 amp fuse and then one for a purple lead and one for yellow lead) Well on the new solenoid I just put the purple and yellow lead together. The boat started and after 5 seconds made a squealling noise and died. Now the when I turn the key NOTHING happens.

I took the O Rileys starter off and took it bad and ordered a marine grade starter / solenoid for the local boat shop. But that starter on and still NOTHING. I did a little research and found out that there is a little white box that connects to the same post at the battery lead and its suppose to be a 90 amp fuse? Do you guys think I might have blown that fuse and thats why i'm not getting nothing? thanks for the help guys

Well on the new solenoid I just put the purple and yellow lead together. The boat started and after 5 seconds made a squealling noise and died.

The reason for the noise was when the oil pressure switch for the fuel pump pressurized, it engaged the starter. That's why Merc just didn't put them on the same terminal.

To test the fuse, disconnect the battery ground. Remove the wire from the small terminal of the fuse, reconnect the battery and check for power on the small terminal of the fuse. If no power, replace the fuse. Disconnect the battery before replacing.

You mean without the fuse?

Ayuh,.... Yes,... Those fuses never even existed til a few years ago....

I call 'em the Lawyer Fuse, brought on by the nanny state to protect yerself, from yerself...

For the last 100 years, the battery was attached directly to the starter...

So how is that fuse even working or doing anything in the first place? Sorry I'm for my ignorance...

haha I know that but its on the same post that the battery is hooked to on the solenoid. So your saying just take the fuse off and then try to start the boat?

Ayuh,... The Fuse is attached to the starter's post,...

The battery Wire is attached to the Fuse....

Remove the fuse, 'n attach the wire Directly to the Starter's post, 'n the motor oughta Start, or atleast spin over....

I have no clue, but it's old and from the old micro fisch era. It also shows up in the old wiring diagrams in the manuals that haven't been updated for many years.

So if the boat starts without the fuse do I need to replace it or just don't worry about it?

Re: Bad Fuse on Solenoid? 4.3 Mercruiser

That fuse supplies power to the circuit breaker which in turn supplies power to the ignition switch. If you can crank the engine over the fuse is good.
What exactly is your problem?

You have me confused now, you first ask this.
So if the boat starts without the fuse do I need to replace it or just don't worry about it?
\

Which to me means the engine starts. Now you say:
I don't get nothing when I turn the key

Which is it ????????

Have you checked the fuse with a meter?

I was asking if I should leave the fuse out if it does start Bond told me to take the fuse off and try starting it and no I havn't checked with a meter yet i'm at home so I will get on that once I get off
