Re: Bad Fuse on Solenoid? 4.3 Mercruiser

Bond-O and Don

There is a orange (which goes to the alternator) and a red (which goes to the slave solenoid) cable that is combined together and is attached to the fuse and then the fuse is attached to the same post on the solenoid that the + lead from the battery is on. If I take the orange and red leads off the fuse the connector is to small to go on the solenoid post. So is there anyway else I can rule out if I have a blown fuse.I have a light tester but not real sure on how to use it. thanks for the help guys

Ayuh,... Take yer Test Light, 'n attach the clip/clamp to the motor's block, or battery ground(-)....

Touch the wires on each side of the fuse....

If the light lights on the starter side, there's battery voltage there....

Touch the light to the Other side of the fuse, with the other wires,.... Does it Light,..??

If Not, the fuse is Blown....

If it Lights, the fuse is passin' battery voltage....

So I need to hook it all back up and make it normal including the battery and do the testing?

No, if you have a multimeter you can check the resistance between the fuse terminals. There should be no resistance if the fuse is good, and it will be infinity if it's bad. If you only have a voltage test light, you'll need power to the circuit. Or bypass the fuse altogether like Bond-O said.

Re: Bad Fuse on Solenoid? 4.3 Mercruiser - similar issue on 5.0

I'm having a similar issue. 05 Chapparral 210 SSi with Mercruiser 5.0. We used a 12V booster, as before, to get going this season and took for a 45 min ride to charge a little. Booster removed to see if charge took and nothing happens when key is turned. Dealer told us it was the 90A fuse and it was changed with no effect. New battery & 50A breaker near battery was checked good. 50A over engine was not popped and we bypassed to be sure. Under dash breakers also good and I'm left scratching my head. Terminals are not reversed and kill switch looks good.
Any ideas???

Just want to thank this forum for help with the hidden fuse on the 4.3 Mercruiser. I had the exact same problem and without the knowledge gained here, I'm sure it would have cost me a lot of money to replace that fuse. Why would they place that inline fuse in such an impossible location to find? Just happy it happened in my slip and not way off shore on Lake Michigan. Thanks again
