Bad gas?

Can't think of anything else. Rebuilt the carb, new float, needle, gaskets, fuel line, sparkplugs ect. Has good compression and a hot spark. My gas is a few months old but I ran my other outboard on it a few weeks ago. This is a 1954 Evinrude 15hp. I'll get some fresh gas in the morning and try that.

I don't see a fuel pump listed among all the things that you replaced. Will it run at all, right after priming with the bulb?

Re: Bad gas?

It's a pressurized tank. It is getting gas to the carb, I can see it in the filter bowl. I cleaned all the passages with carb cleaner and blew them out with compressed air. This is not the first carb I have rebuilt but something ain't right.

Re: Bad gas?

CC67....
Is it running at all? If so, what's it doing you don't like? Some things I've had problems with in the past on carb problems:
[/LIST]I forgot once to clean the little passage that runs from the bottom of the float bowl to the top of the side of the float bowl.

  • If you took off the plate behind the carb to check the reeds, make sure it's sealed and DON"T tighten the bolts that hold it on too tight, use a new gasket. Check for leaks there and around the carb by spraying a little WD-40 while it's running, if it'll run, and see if there's any difference while spraying. You might also try the propane thing as it worked well for me in the past
The float might be out of adjustment and your filter is filling but not the carb. bowl. Make sure the needle is releasing and letting fuel in. If it is, the darned thing ought to at least run.
[*]If it's missing badly, try looking in the dark with it running and looking for any arcing around the plug ends or wires, etc.

  • Are you sure the spark is good? You didn't say you replaced the coils and they are absolutely notorious for being bad after many years. I had some that would shock the ___ out of you but weren't any good.
If you've got good spark and the carb bowl is filling with fuel, it should run a little.

  • Did you look at the tips of the high and low speed adj. needles? Sometimes people will overtighten them and put a groove inthe tip which will cause it to really booger up and be difficult to adjust the mixture.
Wires on the right plug? Sometimes I do something idiotic and simple like that and can't figure out what the problem is--worth a once-over. the wire with the little bronze collar on it is the top wire.

  • Also, there are usually 3 tiny holes in the top of the back of the carb throat that are for idle (I believe) which would be easy to stop up. Have you squirted carb cleaner in idle passage to see if it'll spit cleaner out of those 3 tiny holes?
Just a few ideas from my numerous boogers in the past,
JBJ

They are newer coils and I have good spark. I shot some carb cleaner in the carb throat and it would run for a second, so it seems like it's not getting fuel for some reason. Probably something simple.

Re: Bad gas?

Did you ever try the fresh gas? I had to remove/clean/soak the carb on my 1959 Johnson 35HP THREE times before it would finally run right. Good luck!

Re: Bad gas?

Going to blow some air through the slow speed circuit and try some fresh gas. We'll see.

Re: Bad gas?

There should be a core plug in the carburetor, which is removed to clean the low speed orifices. If you did not remove it prior to blowing air through the carb, there could still be some dirt in it. If you did, but didn't seat the new core plug properly, or the casting is out of round where it seats, you could have leakage. I've never actually had a core plug leak so I'm not aure if that would cause the level of problem you are experiencing but am just throwing up some ideas. Dirt blocking the orifices is another thing and I would say it definately would causes problems. Any of the ex or current marine techs have any thoughts on this?

Well the gas did it. Fired right up and pumped water good to boot. Going to do the de-carbon thing with Seafoam for good measure. Next in line is the 58.:D

Sounds good - those are great motors! I remember using one when I was a kid and I always liked them. Very strong runners!

Dang, SAMO, how could you NOT have an old 15 up there in your area? Are you holding out for a bargain?
Do you want the evinrude or the johnson '56 15--- or like me, both??!!
I only have 3 18's myself but am thinking of selling one so I can get away with buying a 25 or a 15..

Re: Bad gas?

Not holding out. Have never seen one for sale. And I'd prefer the Johnson. Only made em in '56. More of a rarity. (not that I can find any of em!) In general I prefer the Johnson colors and design although I tend to end up with more Evinrudes I think.
