Tohatsu m40c. The engine is slipping out of gear and
It only comes with high rpms.
Look at the pictures. I have demolish the gear house and it was surprisingly easy to do.

Are really the clutch dog in so bad condision or is it the gear who are making the forwardgear to slipping?

Will it work if I replace the gear and clutch dog with new one's

Welcome to Iboats,

Strange thing that gear box is not slipping off constanttly. Is doing so as if with hiccup. Is drive shaft upper splines in good working order ? Teeth on any other gearbox part is missing ?

Yes were wierd. Only when i rev the engine.
The upper gear teeht looked fine its only the forward gear . Do I need to change forward gear ? Is it the forward gear who make the gears to slip Not the dog?

Can I switch the front gear with the backgear? Is it the same? If I can press the bearings out

1. The pinion (B) and forward (A) gears have chipped/damaged teeth.
2. The gears have rust from water damage.
3. The clutch dog is worn, so are the lugs in the A gear.
3. No, the A and C gears are not interchangeable.

You need a seal kit, all 3 gears, a new clutch spring, and a clutch dog to do this right. Over $400 in parts. Are you sure you want to do that? You will also need a shim kit, dial indicators and a special tool kit to set the gear lash. In addition, that motor may well be 25-30 years old... Other bits are likely also in bad shape.

A crafty machine shop might be able to sharpen the lugs on the clutch dog, to get you running. Will that work well? No way to tell for sure.

Hello. Was searching the web and find this retailer site from Japan. And all the things I need will cost 200? €/ 224$ except from the back gear. I will keep that because it doesent look bad and all the teeth are intact

Specs are not available, slash must be adjusted with manufacturer's specific lash feeler gage which are not like auto ones. Adjustments on lower legs are bit complicated and with fatal consequences if messing without proper tools, knowledge and experience.

I too have a m40c, love the motor, good power, reliable, and easy as heck to work on. Keeeeeep it. Pictures of the gears and dog would really help. Pinion, forward, reverse, dog. Might be something as simple as weak dog spring, or worn out gear shifter that pushes dog to position. I found a dog for mine on ebay, used for $16 dollars like new. You can find several used gears. You can pm me, I am very familiar with this motor.

Don't over complicate the problem, start simple. Was there water in lower unit oil? Were teeth missing from any gears, Pinion, dog? Also have you tried another prop on it to insure the prop is not the problem. Also how many r.p.m at w.o.t? It sounded like your motor was straining, might need to lower pitch of motor. R. P. M's hold be between 5400 and 5800. Anything less and your putting too much strain on motor.

Also I had that exact problem with another motor of mine, I just had to adjust shifter linkage.

Shift rod is not adjustable on these. The gears and dog are shot, and the LU did have water in it. Time for some new parts.

Just to know, if gear case was well adjusted at factory and internal components were ruined by water intrusion, is it possible to swap old components for new ones without doing any internal adjustments ?

It's hard for me to tell from my little phone screen, is that a big chip out of the dog on left side of picture? Is there a picture of forward gear were the dog ties into it?

Big, WHOOPS on my part and I apologize. I'm doing this on my phone, and it finally got the rest of the pictures. Yep, F.U.B.A.R Money time. Rusty nasty mess. Again my apologies to all. There's alot to be done, and replaced. Ouch. Might as well do as y'all said, change it all or forget about the motor.
