BAD LEAK

This is a 1986 Mazda b2000 pick up with a 4 cylinder engine. It has just sprung a cooling water leak that is coming from the area hidden by the starter motor. The leak is a stream of anti freeze that shoots down from the engine on to the ground. Even with a mirror and a light I can not see where the leak is coming from. The freeze out plugs are on the other side of the block and are in tact.Anyone have an idea what could be leaking from behind the starter? I hope it is not the engine block but can not see any hose in that area.<br /><br />Bill

There mey be freeze out plugs behind the bell housing where you can't see them. I would drop the tranny and have another look. If that's not an option I've had great sucess with 112 Mazda.

Are you Sure it's not coming from Above the starter ??????<br /><br />Just because you See it at the starter, Doesn't Mean it's leaking there........

Forsure Bondo gravity takes everything down always look up first it will end up down on the ground I would yank that starter to see better ,not uncommon to have frost plugs on that side or whatever you call it or block drain plug might be hiding there

Thanks for the replys fellows,<br />So far I have only been able to look at the engine from the top and like I said its hard to see where the leak is coming from. Hopefully with the slightly warmer weather today I will get the truck up on ramps and be able to see something from the underside. I see that l.i. chuck lives in patchogue , Hi neighbor I live in medford near Sams club and have a 30 sea ray we use out of mt. sinai on the north shore. Its a small world.<br />Bill

Mystery solved !!!!!!!!!<br />Put the truck on ramps crawled under and still could not see where the leak was coming from. Then put a blanket over part of the engine and layed on top of it. I used a trouble light and a mirror and found a 1/2" I.D. molded rubber hose that is teed to the hose feeding the heater, it then dissapears under the intake manifold and connects to a piece of steel tube. Today I will try the same setup and see if I can get the hose off, it is held on with wire clamps with philips screws. I will probably have to buy the hose at the local Mazda dealer as the auto parts store does not have such a special part with the molded in bends. getting the new hose on will also be a lot of fun but I will give it a try.<br />I think the same guy that designed the water pump mounting on my starboard mercruiser had something to do with the location of this little hose.<br />You fellows had the right Idea the leak was above the starter, way above.<br />Bill

Parts stores sell hoses with a wire inside that you can mold to hold a shape such as an unusual bend. Check to see if they have that... it has to be cheaper than Mazda or keep in mind that Mazda is in bed with Ford and maybe a Ford hose will work.<br /><br />Bob

I doubt its a special hose, just take it to the autoparts store and see what they have. I needed a similar piece of hose and they just gave me 12 inches of scrap that worked perfect at the perfect price.

Hi tex,<br />You were correct! after removing the old hose I took it to the local auto parts store and he matched it up with some thick walled stuff and it cost $3 including two hose clamps. I can only wonder what the molded hose at mazda would have cost.The old truck is running great again and ready to go another few thousand miles.<br />Bill

I remember when they first built all those homes.<br /><br />I am much more modest with my boating. 15' Bayliner I run around the GSB in with my boys. Also a Sunfish and several canoes.
