The first mechanic is obviously not a mechanic. Gather all of your paper work, bills, etc pertaining from that original shyster, then with the bill and explanation from your second mechanic along with a signed statement from him if possible..... take the rip off artist to small claims court.

From what you've said, you're speaking of at least $883.00 which would better in your pocket rather than his. Stop in to your local court house and see how easy it is to do just that.

Also..... If you used a credit card, call the credit card company and notify them that you wish to dispute all payments pertaining to the guess work parts replacer.

To bad you didn't right a check out, you might of been able to stop payments on the check. I know I would of but I also have a relative that works at the bank I deal with.

Sorry to hear about the rip off. Take him to small claims court for sure, this case should be an obvious winner in court.

In most states, stop payment on a check is a crime, the mech would have a mechanic's lien on your motor and the legal right to come get it as well as have a warrant sworn out for your arrest.

Disclaimer: I'm no lawyer, and this is *not* legal advice.

I'm not saying it would of been right, but it wasn't right on what the mechanic did either. If you could of held the check until you got some kind of response on why the mechanic did what he did then maybe you could of gotten him to reduce his overall price on the "job" that he supposidly done. I wouldn't pay for that mess. You paid and it is to late, lesson learned but it doesn't mean that you can't or won't get your money back. As said take him to small claims court.

I'll give you an example of what happened to me one time (a little bit of a different situation). I bought a lap top computer suposidly a 3.2 gig processor loaded by the way it was explained to me by the owner of the laptop store. I brought it home and found out that it wasn't anything near the size I was told it was. I stopped payments on the check and brought the computer back to him. He didn't even cash the check yet to my knowledge, I told him that I stopped the check. I ordered a lap top from Compaq (in the size like I wanted) and I am still using the computer today. I only paid $200 or so more for a brand new lap top.

No you shouldn't have to pay, I am sure though if this guy has been a "mechanic" for any length of time he has been taken to court before.
I think Joe Reeves gives the best advice, gather all your evidence and prepare for a fight, this one should be easy to win but it will take some time.
Good luck

Maybe let others know who and where so they won't get ripped off!

Contact you credit card issuer. They have quite a bit of pull in things like this. Probably be cheaper and easier than small claims since they will freeze the money untill the matter is settled.
