Re: bad old fuel

Ok when you do go to start the motor, may i make a few suggestions?

If it were my boat i would clean the filter in the fitting that enters the carb.

I would clean the filter in the fuel pump if there is one.

If you have a fuel water separator , oil looking canister that is hooked into your fuel system, usually right near the fuel pump. I would change the filter.

Then i would unhook the inline fuel tank and hook up a external tank.

With fresh clean fuel.

I would take off the flame arrester of the carb. and pour 3-4 tablespoons of fuel into the carb.

I would make sure the battery is charged, and put the throttle in neutral and pump it 3-4 times fully, leave it down about 1/3 of the way and go ahead and start it.

Make sure water is going to the out drive.

In my own inexpert opinion that is.

my copy of Clymer manual describes the procedures that you mentioned, and i will be sure to perform them. however, i must ask the following:

- why place a bit of fuel directly into the carb?

- why hook up external fuel supply, even if it is temporary? i figured that draining it and flushing it with a few gallons of fresh fuel (as per you instructions) would be suffice.

lastly, i noticed in the past that the engine did not start unless i had the throttle handle nearly all the way down, even after pumping at least 4-5 times. is it important to have a it go only about 1/3 of the way down? and if so, should i make adjustments, and where?
