bad tach. maybe

hello friends,i have 1988 110 johnson(vrodisabled)model#J11OTLCCA.about 3 trips ago tach.stopped working i checked all connections and cleaned them.still didnt work.i checked my voltage like the manual said and i guess its good with key off,test meter read 12.5 volts when running at idle about 13.5 volts and when i rev.it up it stops at around 15.1 volts.anyway to test my tach?will automotive one work?or is it something else i should be looking at?thanks for any help and advice.

The automotive tach probably ain't gonna work for ya. Use a volt meter and check voltage between the "send" wire and grd. You should have 3.5vac minimum at idle and 5-7vac at approx. 2000rpm. If you've got these voltages, the tach is bonkers. If you don't have these voltages, start lookin' at the rectifier.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty
